Central High School students are scoring higher in academic tests and exploring post-secondary education opportunities, despite an uptick in at-risk factors, according to school officials.

Grand Haven Christian middle school students worked in the community Friday morning as a part of their service-learning program. The purpose of the event was to work towards the school's mission of "educating minds and shaping hearts for service to God in His world."

Michael Wilson's life began unraveling three years ago when he lost his wife to pancreatic cancer. A year later, the 57-year-old lost his house because of mounting medical bills and the fact that the house was in his wife's name. Wilson said the bank refused to negotiate with him once they learned his wife had died.

Money problems are so severe in one Michigan school district that officials have given up hope of finding a solution themselves. They're ready for the extreme option: a take-over by a state-appointed "emergency manager.'
