WMAAA remains closed today

The West Michigan Academy of Arts & Academics is closed again today because of a sprinkling system malfunction. School was canceled Friday when staff arriving for work about 7 a.m. discovered some flooding.

Muskegon band rocks GHHS stadium with ‘Superstar’

The Muskegon Big Reds took top honors in the Class A division of the Grand Haven Marching Band Invitational Saturday, playing selections from the rock opera "Superstar.' The Fruitport Trojans kept the theme flying with "Angels' to take first place in Class B. As the host school, Grand Haven wrapped up the evening by performing an exhibition to music from the ‘70s and ‘80s rock band Styx, including "Mr. Roboto' and "Too Much Time on My Hands.' GHHS did not compete.

Jeffers families celebrate autumn

The theme of the night was pie, and everyone got a piece of the action Friday at Jeffers Elementary School. The P.I.E. (peace inspiring education) Harvest Festival included children's games, prizes, pizza, raffles, a pie-baking contest and a silent auction for the chance to throw pies in the face of Spring Lake Public Schools staff. The annual school fundraiser was expected to raise close to $10,000, according to Jeffers Parents Organization President J.J. DesJardin.

Student count up 35 in SL, 1 in GH

Although state dollars per student are down, numbers were up for Student Count Day at Spring Lake Public Schools. Enrollment in Spring Lake schools for the 2011-12 school year is 2,461 for K-12 and alternative education, according to the count taken Wednesday. That's an increase of 35 students over last year. The district will receive $6,880 per pupil, a reduction of $450 per from the 2010-11 school year.

Renaissance cards reward GHHS students for academic achievements

Students who get good grades at Grand Haven High School are being rewarded for their efforts. The Grand Haven High School Renaissance Reward program, which began in 1990, is in full swing again this year in honoring honor students for their academic achievements. "It is very tough for these kids to earn good grades,' said Michelle Strainer, a parent volunteer with the organization. "They play sports and work (as well as study). We should reward them.'
