The Muskegon Big Reds took top honors in the Class A division of the Grand Haven Marching Band Invitational Saturday, playing selections from the rock opera "Superstar.' The Fruitport Trojans kept the theme flying with "Angels' to take first place in Class B. As the host school, Grand Haven wrapped up the evening by performing an exhibition to music from the ‘70s and ‘80s rock band Styx, including "Mr. Roboto' and "Too Much Time on My Hands.' GHHS did not compete.

The theme of the night was pie, and everyone got a piece of the action Friday at Jeffers Elementary School. The P.I.E. (peace inspiring education) Harvest Festival included children's games, prizes, pizza, raffles, a pie-baking contest and a silent auction for the chance to throw pies in the face of Spring Lake Public Schools staff. The annual school fundraiser was expected to raise close to $10,000, according to Jeffers Parents Organization President J.J. DesJardin.

Although state dollars per student are down, numbers were up for Student Count Day at Spring Lake Public Schools. Enrollment in Spring Lake schools for the 2011-12 school year is 2,461 for K-12 and alternative education, according to the count taken Wednesday. That's an increase of 35 students over last year. The district will receive $6,880 per pupil, a reduction of $450 per from the 2010-11 school year.

Students who get good grades at Grand Haven High School are being rewarded for their efforts. The Grand Haven High School Renaissance Reward program, which began in 1990, is in full swing again this year in honoring honor students for their academic achievements. "It is very tough for these kids to earn good grades,' said Michelle Strainer, a parent volunteer with the organization. "They play sports and work (as well as study). We should reward them.'

Changes are taking place this school year in how official student counts are handled to calculate per-pupil aid from the state. The number of students counted during the fall count day on Oct. 5 will be worth 90 percent of state aid, rather than 75 percent as in past years, The Detroit News reported Monday. A winter count in February will be worth 10 percent instead of 25 percent.

Crosswalk signs meant to help schoolchildren cross busy intersections have been causing some confusion, and local police want drivers to be educated on just what those signs mean. The signs, such as the one located at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Wisconsin Street near Mary A. Bullying in schools has evolved from the stereotypical after-school rumbles at the playground to more verbal and written remarks that local school officials say are equally as damaging. With recently progressive developments in technology, vulgar text messages and Facebook posts have joined the ranks of "trash talk' as a profound form of bullying. Students and staff of the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district say they are witnessing these more common bullying methods at all school levels and aim to put an end to it.

Calvin College biology professor David DeHeer, 66, died Friday at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids. DeHeer, who had a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis, had declined suddenly in recent weeks. A Grand Haven native, DeHeer attended Calvin through 1966, but completed a degree in zoology (with a minor in chemistry) at the University of Arizona in 1968. He earned a Ph.D. in molecular biology with a minor in biochemistry at the same institution in 1972.

Deborah Herrington, principal investigator and associate professor of chemistry at Grand Valley State University, has received a $1.1 million grant to expand and further study the Target Inquiry program. The TI program is an innovative professional development program designed to improve the quality and frequency of inquiry-based instruction in middle and high school science classes.
