State Sen. Arlan Meekhof and state Rep. Joe Haveman introduced legislation Thursday aimed at stopping the practice of using school resources as collection agencies between unions and union members. Senate Bill 636 and House Bill 4929 would prevent unions using the public school district payroll process to collect dues from their membership, leaving them the responsibility of collecting their own dues, and saving time and money for local schools.

A cheerful, schoolwide mosaic and a new principal greeted students on their first day of school this morning at Lakeshore Middle School. A 12-by-8-foot mosaic mural boasting the school's name and its motto - "Excellent, respectful, responsible, kind; that's how we roll at the school by the shore' - is adhered in one of the main hallways where the former entrance to the main office stood prior to being remodeled in 2010.

Students spanned the spectrum of emotions this morning at Spring Lake High School. On a crisp, cool and sunny start to the school year, seniors mingled over breakfast in the parking lot, while freshmen scurried about the hallways in search of their lockers. Madeline Dekker was one of those freshmen. The 15-year-old transferred to Lakerland from Grand Haven this school year. "It's really scary because I don't know where my locker is,' said Dekker, who approached technology teacher Aaron Andres in the hallway to ask for directions.

Spring Lake and Grand Haven schools had mixed results in the Michigan Department of Education's 2011 Top to Bottom list. All of the Spring Lake schools scored in the 90th percentile or better among schools across the state, but Grand Haven High School and Lakeshore and White Pines Middle Schools scored 87, 78 and 72, respectively. The Top to Bottom scores are based on a complex formula of state test scores in math, reading, science, social studies and writing, as well as graduation rates.

The Safe Routes to School construction project in the village is scheduled to wrap up next week - just in time for the 2011-12 school year. The intersections of Prospect and Exchange streets and Williams and Exchange streets are scheduled for repaving on Thursday, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton. But Exchange Street likely won't be open to traffic until a crosswalk grid pattern is completed early next week. Cotton said, if the weather holds, he expects Exchange Street to be open on Aug. 31.

The Grand Haven school district scored above the Ottawa County Intermediate School District averages on its Michigan Merit Exam. The MME is a test that has a combination of the ACT, former Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) test and Work Keys, according to Grand Haven Area Public Schools Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Melinda Brink.

Grand Haven High School will host an orientation for all students in grades 9-12 during the week of Aug. 22-25. At orientation, students will have their picture taken, receive their instant ID, class schedule and locker assignment. Students will be able to purchase their parking permit, deposit money into their food service account and purchase year books. The orientation schedule is: - Monday, Aug. 22 for seniors - Tuesday, Aug. 23 for juniors - Wednesday, Aug. 24 for sophomores - Thursday, Aug. 25 for freshmen

The average score for Michigan students on the ACT college entrance exam has improved. A report from test administrators released Wednesday said Michigan students in the graduating class of 2011 had an average composite score of 20.0 on the ACT. That's up from 19.7 on a scale of 1 to 36 in the previous year. The average composite score nationwide for the class of 2011 was 21.1, up from 21.0.
