Grand Haven swim coach Doug Thorne has been coaching at the high school level for 22 years, but this winter, he's experienced a first. Typically, Thorne's squads have had one, maybe two foreign exchange students, and rarely do they make much of an impact with scoring in meets. Because of changes in state funding, the Spring Lake district is following the trend of school districts statewide and transitioning to full-time kindergarten.
