An annual tradition on Grand Haven's east side, Eastown Fallfest is slated to take place this Saturday at East Grand River Park. The weekend event includes a variety of activities, a 5k run and a pancake eating contest at Grand Haven Christian School. At noon, the Parade-A-Palooza takes place, followed by the Big Wheel Race. Children activities including pumpkins, face-painting, a dunk tank, the Gabagouache historic canoe and bike safety demonstrations will take place from 1-5 p.m.

In early August, a fire destroyed the Word of Hope Community Center on Third Avenue in Fruitport. Now, nearly two months later, the Word of Hope Church is in the process of rebuilding the center. On Saturday from 1-5 p.m., the church is holding a pig roast at Pomona Park to raise money for the rebuilding of the center. "Although the building was insured, we still need to raise some extra money for improvements and expansion to make the building usable for present-day ministry,' said the Rev. John Koedyker, pastor of Word of Hope Church.

The Ottawa County Clerk's Office has entered the digital age when it comes to sending certified documents for residents and those doing business. The office recently took on a service called TrueCertify by ImageSoft, in which people can authenticate and deliver certified documents electronically, allowing the recipient to verify the document contents via the Internet.

Bus loads of students converged on Grand Haven to participate in the second annual ArtWalk scavenger hunt on Tuesday, as part of ArtWalk Education Day. The students started arriving at 10 a.m. at the ArtWalk headquarters, 18 N. Fifth St., for the scavenger hunt that had them searching for various types of art - including a watercolor painting, something made of wood, a two-dimensional piece and a sculpture.

Olivia Simaz, a 10th-grader at Grand Haven High School, attended the See You at the Pole event before school this morning for the first time. "(I was comfortable) because I know everybody here,' she said. About 40 students circled at the base of the flag poles outside the school, held hands and prayed together. A few more joined in when they saw what was happening. "It's a good experience,' 10th-grader Loren Johnson said. "It's a comfortable environment,' 10th-grader Maggie Lalonde added.

Prosecutors in Grand Rapids can pursue drug charges against a man who is permitted to grow medical marijuana but was caught with too many plants. The Michigan Appeals Court said the 88 plants seized by police a year ago were too many for Ryan Bylsma. The court today agreed with a Kent County judge who has refused to dismiss the case. Bylsma is a registered caregiver for two people, which means he can grow 24 plants. But the apartment he controlled in Grand Rapids had dozens more.

On the walls of the home locker room for the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena, the minor league hockey team proudly displays the names of alumni who have gone on to skate for the big club, the Detroit Red Wings. Among the names in black, bold print is Justin Abdelkader. Tuesday, the locker room housed the White squad during the Red Wings' Red-White scrimmage, creating a homecoming of sorts for the 2004 Mona Shores graduate and star of Michigan State University's 2007 national championship team.

Spring Lake's girls cross country team ran past the rest of the field at Tuesday's first Lakes Eight Conference jamboree of the fall, which was held at Tri-County. The Lakers finished with 34 points, followed by Fremont (45), Ludington (64), Newaygo (139), Tri-County (162), Fruitport (168), Grant (175) and Orchard View (182). The Lakers' Brittany Beeler won the race with a time of 19 minutes, 12 seconds. Cory Cook was fifth at 20:09, followed by Carlyn Artega in sixth in 20:15. Ashley

Spring Lake's varsity volleyball team remained locked in second place in the Lakes Eight Conference following its closer-than-expected three-game sweep of host Ludington on Tuesday. The Lakers' largest point differential at the end was just three points. They squeaked out a Game 1 win, 27-25, took Game 2, 25-22, then completed the sweep with a 25-23 victory in Game 3.

Authorities on Tuesday identified two Macomb County men killed in a private helicopter crash in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. Dan Logghe, 46, of Richmond was piloting the helicopter when it went down Friday in Caledonia Township, about 85 miles north of Bay City, said state police in Alpena. His passenger was Mark May, 34, of Sterling Heights. A hunter found the wreckage Monday morning on his property in a remote part of Alcona County. Relatives told police that Logghe was headed to a hunting cabin near Alpena, about 15 miles from the crash site.

The Saugatuck Center for the Arts' "About It!' series returns with an intimate look at the massive floating landmark in Saugatuck's harbor - the Keewatin. "From Scotland to Saugatuck: The Life of the SS Keewatin' will take place at the center, 400 Culver St., at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated. Eric Conroy, who worked on the ship in 1963-64, will share his experiences as a waiter and crewmember aboard the Keewatin, and introduce the workings of the ship during its storied career.

The sound of a helicopter will soon be heard near Harbor Island, where spraying is set to take place to eradicate invasive phragmites. Weather permitting, a helicopter is slated to come over Harbor Island on Wednesday to spray stands of phragmites. "Hopefully, we will be doing something this week,' said Leslie Newman, president of Wetland Watch, a local group that is heading up the effort to eliminate phragmites in Northwest Ottawa County.
