A major research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to Dr. Graham Peaslee of the Hope College chemistry faculty will be used to support a project aimed at recycling at the atomic level. Peaslee is leading an effort to develop a system for collecting left-over radioisotopes generated through the use of large particle accelerators. He noted that the material, which currently goes to waste, could then be put to a variety of uses depending on the type collected - from cancer treatments to detecting illicit nuclear activity abroad.

Central Park Players will open its first full season since moving its performances to Lakeshore Middle School with the romantic serio-comedy, "Bus Stop' by William Inge, on Oct. 7. Some may recall the 1956 film - loosely based on the play - as a boisterous romantic comedy about a young, loudmouthed cowboy bent on lassoing a chanteuse played by Marilyn Monroe. Inge's "Bus Stop' revolves around a young nightclub singer and her cowboy-fiancée, Bo, and their struggle to find love in the modern world.

Police recovered about $59,000 stolen from a Grand Rapids-area bank and tossed from the window of a getaway rental truck this week. An additional $16,000 - snatched up by passers-by before officers could collect it - could not be found, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Grand Rapids. Adam Jones and his wife, Tammy Jo Jones, were named as suspects in the complaint. They were reported to have been arraigned Thursday in Kent County Circuit Court.

A wind advisory is in effect from 6 tonight until 2 p.m. Friday for the Lakeshore counties of Ottawa, Allegan, Mason, Muskegon, Oceana and Van Buren. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids said scattered power outages, and downed tree limbs and power lines may result from high winds later today. Driving in the high winds later today will become difficult, particularly with higher profile vehicles.

Police in Grand Rapids said a suspected drunken driver jumped into the Grand River to avoid capture and was fished out after about 45 minutes early today. Police said the man collided with an off-duty officer's cruiser, then ran away and jumped into the water near the fish ladder at the Sixth Street Dam. He got soaked while staying on the fish ladder, and was eventually pulled to safety by rescuers.

Officials say progress is being made in an effort to ramp up service for an expanded Harbor Transit, slated to begin early next year. "Everything is going good,' Harbor Transit Director Tom Manderscheid said Thursday. Grand Haven Township voters on May 3 approved a 0.95-mill transportation tax, which includes 0.45 mill for the Harbor Transit service, to bring the local bus service to the township. The township service will allow Harbor Transit to reach the communities of Grand Haven, Spring Lake Village, Ferrysburg and Grand Haven Township.

Hope College musicians will perform a "Brown Bag Concert' at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 E. Eighth St., at noon Friday, Oct. 7. The public is invited and admission is free. Two people are dead after the driver of an sport utility vehicle hydro-planed and crashed the vehicle into a house south of Holland on Thursday night. It happened around 6:30 p.m. on 146th Avenue in Fillmore Township of Allegan County. The crash did extensive damage to the house, police said. The homeowners said they were away celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary when the crash happened.

Spring Lake extended its Lakes Eight Conference winning streak to 27 games spanning the past three years with an 8-0 victory over Fremont on Thursday. The win wraps up the Lakers' third consecutive regular-season Lakes Eight title. Eight different players scored goals for Spring Lake: Alec Strahl, Austin Gabris, Adam Clauss, K.J. Sanchez, A.J. Broughten, Ben Keller, Michael Zietlow and Riley Kammeraad. The Lakers are now 13-1 overall and 7-0 in league games.

Grand Haven suffered a disappointing setback at the hands of East Kentwood on Thursday. The host Buccaneers lost 25-20, 22-25, 27-25, 25-19, falling to 21-10 overall and 2-2 in the O-K Red Conference. The loss virtually eliminates the Bucs from contention for the league title. The Bucs had no answer for East Kentwood's Natalie Means, who finished with 25 kills and four aces. Abby Cole led the Bucs with 19 kills and five blocks, while Krysteena Davis and Taylor Craymer each had 10 kills. Davis added four blocks.

A 25-year-old Battle Creek man has been charged with murder in this summer's death of a 3-year-old girl who was in his care. The Battle Creek Enquirer reported police were looking for Leo Ackley. He's charged with open murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of Baylee Stenman. Baylee died Aug. 1 at a hospital in Kalamazoo after being found unresponsive July 28. Charges were announced this week by Calhoun County prosecutors after autopsy results showed the child died from head trauma.

Grand Haven's girls golf team placed sixth at Thursday's O-K Red postseason tournament, which was held at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale. Grandville and East Kentwood tied for the league title, with Hudsonville finishing just one stroke behind the leaders. Sophomore Martha Ramsey shot a career-low 96 for the Bucs, including a 45 on the front nine. Kira Glass and Amanda Merz each shot personal-best rounds of 110.
