Pilot, passenger in Alpena-area helicopter crash identified

Authorities on Tuesday identified two Macomb County men killed in a private helicopter crash in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. Dan Logghe, 46, of Richmond was piloting the helicopter when it went down Friday in Caledonia Township, about 85 miles north of Bay City, said state police in Alpena. His passenger was Mark May, 34, of Sterling Heights. A hunter found the wreckage Monday morning on his property in a remote part of Alcona County. Relatives told police that Logghe was headed to a hunting cabin near Alpena, about 15 miles from the crash site.

Program on Keewatin in Saugatuck on Oct. 6

The Saugatuck Center for the Arts' "About It!' series returns with an intimate look at the massive floating landmark in Saugatuck's harbor - the Keewatin. "From Scotland to Saugatuck: The Life of the SS Keewatin' will take place at the center, 400 Culver St., at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Admission is free, but donations will be appreciated. Eric Conroy, who worked on the ship in 1963-64, will share his experiences as a waiter and crewmember aboard the Keewatin, and introduce the workings of the ship during its storied career.

Youth, parenting classes offered at 2nd Christian Reformed Church

The health ministry team at Second Christian Reformed Church for the next four Sundays is offering sessions on youth and parenting issues. Harbor Island phragmites treatment set for Wednesday

The sound of a helicopter will soon be heard near Harbor Island, where spraying is set to take place to eradicate invasive phragmites. Weather permitting, a helicopter is slated to come over Harbor Island on Wednesday to spray stands of phragmites. "Hopefully, we will be doing something this week,' said Leslie Newman, president of Wetland Watch, a local group that is heading up the effort to eliminate phragmites in Northwest Ottawa County.

Free document shredding service available Saturday

Shred Docs will be providing a free and confidential document shredding service at Spring Lake District Library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The public is invited to bring the materials they would like shredded to the Shred Docs mobile unit, which will be parked in the parking lot of the library, 123 E. Exchange St. There is a limit of 100 pounds per person that will be shredded. Shredding sensitive personal documents like canceled checks, tax records and credit card statements is a good way to help prevent identity theft and credit card fraud, experts say.

Hiker and author to speak at Loutit Dist. Library

Loreen Niewenhuis, author of "A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach,' will present a discussion about her adventurous story from her walk around Lake Michigan at Loutit District Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. It will take place in Program Room A of the library, 407 Columbus Ave. The presentation will include a discussion about her 64-day, 1,000 mile adventure - with photos she took along the way, followed by questions and answers. JCI to hold job fair in GH today

Johnson Controls is holding a job fair in Grand Haven from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. The company said it is looking to fill a total of 100 open, permanent positions for its B and C shifts. Work hours are 6:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. The B shift works Tuesday through Friday and the C shift works Friday through Monday.

Renaissance cards reward GHHS students for academic achievements

Students who get good grades at Grand Haven High School are being rewarded for their efforts. The Grand Haven High School Renaissance Reward program, which began in 1990, is in full swing again this year in honoring honor students for their academic achievements. "It is very tough for these kids to earn good grades,' said Michelle Strainer, a parent volunteer with the organization. "They play sports and work (as well as study). We should reward them.'

Township holds hearing to OK slight tax rate hike

The township's proposed millage rate for 2011 will be slightly above the rate levied last year, according to township officials. The Grand Haven Township Board held a public truth-in-taxation hearing Monday - a requirement under state law in which a taxing unit may not generate more revenue than it did in the prior year, unless it holds such a hearing.

Local districts react to student count changes

Spring Lake Public Schools officials said the new funding formula for state aid associated with student counts will positively impact their district. Changes are taking place this school year in how official student counts are handled to calculate per-pupil aid from the state. The number of students counted during the fall count day on Oct. 5 will be worth 90 percent of state aid, rather than 75 percent as in past years, The Detroit News reported Monday. A winter count in February will be worth 10 percent instead of 25 percent.

Hiker rescued after fall in county park

Emergency crews worked for more than an hour to get through heavy brush to rescue an injured hiker Monday evening, said Crockery Township Fire Chief Gary Dreyer. Firefighters were called to the Crockery Creek Natural Area about 6:15 p.m. after a hiker fell and hit his head on a log, Dreyer said. The Grand Haven man, in his 40s, was hiking with a friend in the Ottawa County park at the end of Wren Street off Leonard Road, Dreyer said.
