Eastern Michigan University men's basketball coach Rob Murphy recently announced the signing of former Grand Haven standout Austin Harper. Harper, who last year played at Glen Oaks Community College, will be eligible to play immedately for the Eagles. "I made a visit to Eastern and felt a connection with the coaches,' Harper said. "I felt that this was a good fit for me and it is a great opportunity to continue my basketball career.'

The Muskegon Big Reds took top honors in the Class A division of the Grand Haven Marching Band Invitational Saturday, playing selections from the rock opera "Superstar.' The Fruitport Trojans kept the theme flying with "Angels' to take first place in Class B. As the host school, Grand Haven wrapped up the evening by performing an exhibition to music from the ‘70s and ‘80s rock band Styx, including "Mr. Roboto' and "Too Much Time on My Hands.' GHHS did not compete.

Rudy Sabo and Ron Westerhouse sat and counted the hundreds of vehicles that wound through a long line on Grand Haven's Harbor Island on Saturday morning. "This has been solid all morning,' Sabo said. Both Grand Haven men are longtime members of the local Eagles Club and two of the more than 80 volunteers who helped out at the Fourth Island Produce Giveaway.

A brief getaway for two very young children Saturday evening ended safely. Moments after the two toddlers walked away from their home, they were discovered playing and unharmed in the railroad tracks near the intersection of Jackson and Fourth streets, confirmed Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.

Kalamazoo voters will decide next month whether to write a relaxed attitude toward marijuana use into the western Michigan community's City Charter. The ballot proposal would direct police to make enforcement of laws against possession of small amounts of marijuana a low priority. Supporters gathered about 2,600 signatures to win a spot for the charter amendment on the Nov. 8 ballot. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has come out against the proposal, as have several Kalamazoo City Commission candidates.

Marcia Howe, a Grand Haven resident and retired Muskegon school teacher, will portray Mother Goose at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum on Saturday, Oct. 22. Howe's portrayal may not be the same Mother Goose your mother remembers. Howe will offer an interesting look at Mother Goose as she reminds you of the many nursery rhymes we learned long ago. Ann Arbor-based ensemble Juice will perform at Allendale High School's Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Juice combines percussion, invented instruments of all kinds, energy and humor in a one-of-a-kind show. The performance will include all-new material featuring a new tune played on 3-foot-tall barrels and a new percussion feature utilizing nearly the entire set simultaneously. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students. They are available at Allendale High School and the True Value store in Allendale.

Police said three adults and an infant from Indiana were killed in a fiery head-on crash in southwestern Michigan on Sunday afternoon. Michigan State Police said the crash happened near Niles. Police said a pickup truck was eastbound on U.S. 12 when it left the road, went back onto the roadway and crossed the center line. The truck collided with a westbound car with four inside it. Both vehicles rolled and were engulfed in flames, and the pickup driver was able to get out.

It looked almost like the leftovers of a demolition derby on Saturday at a field adjacent to the Spring Lake Township Fire Station on 148th Avenue, just south of M-104. But once firefighters converged on the scene, it became more obvious that the mangled vehicles were part of a set of scenarios designed to give the emergency personnel a chance to train with some specialized equipment.
