The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety has recently taken multiple complaints involving graffiti in the downtown area. Numerous buildings, both occupied and abandoned, have been vandalized with spray paint depicting both words and pictures. The incidents have occurred within the past two weeks. GHDPS is requesting anyone with information concerning these incidents to call 911 or Silent Observer at 1-877-88-SILENT (745368). A reward is available through Silent Observer for the arrest and conviction of the suspect(s) responsible for the damage.

Drivers traveling on Robbins Road in Grand Haven will soon be able to cruise a little faster. Grand Haven City Council, by a 4-1 vote Tuesday night, approved raising the speed of the road from 25 to 35 mph from Sheldon Road to Beechtree Street, based on speed studies conducted by the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Based on the decision by City Council, the speed limit on Robbins Road west of Sheldon would remain at 25 mph, and the limit east of Beechtree Street would remain at 35 mph.

Volunteers for a beach clean-up event on Saturday, Sept. 17, are being sought by the Alliance for the Great Lakes. The organization's annual September Adopt-a-Beach cleanup event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon that day at Grand Haven State Park and North Beach Park in Ferrysburg. Since 1991, nearly 70,000 volunteers have effectively removed more than 164 tons of debris from Great Lakes shorelines during this annual event. Beach sweeps are scheduled to happen Sept. 17 in four states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Scott Remenschneider, vice president of Huntington National Bank in Holland, will serve as chairman of the Greater Ottawa County United Way's 2011-12 Community Campaign. The campaign will kick off Sept. 15 - which is also the local United Way's Day of Caring, the largest one-day volunteer event in the county. Remenschneider will announce the campaign goal at NASCAR RV Park (formerly Yogi Bear Camp & Resort) in Grand Haven Township at 12:30 p.m. that day.

Village Council will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 to discuss escalating costs of the Grand River Greenway construction. Village Manager Ryan Cotton learned late last week that pilings used for the wetland boardwalk portion of the nonmotorized path will need to be longer than expected. He said it will add at least $80,000 to the $1.3 million project, which is largely funded by state grants and private and public donations.

Nonaggravated assault charges have been dropped against Western Michigan Christian High School varsity boys basketball coach and physical education teacher Jim Goorman. According to a report by the Norton Shores Police Department, Goorman was accused of shoving a female student in the back with his foot during gym class on March 17. Charges were never filed, and the two parties reached an out-of-court agreement when the Muskegon girl and her family decided they did not want to press charges, according to the police report.

Changes could soon be on the skyline along Columbus Avenue between First and Second streets in Grand Haven. On Tuesday night, City Council unanimously approved an updated brownfield plan that will help bring about a redevelopment at 128 Columbus Ave. The site was formerly a bowling alley and other businesses. According to the plans submitted by property developers, the amended brownfield plan would allow for nearly $2 million in private investment, which would be used for redevelopment at the property.

Police have arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of a Norton Shores store earlier this summer. Based on tips from the community, Norton Shores Police Sgt. James Campbell obtained a search warrant from the Muskegon Prosecutor's Office for a home in the 900 block of Irwin in Muskegon for the suspect. With the assistance of the West Michigan Enforcement Team and the Muskegon Police Department, Norton Shores officers executed the search warrant at approximately 11 a.m. Friday. A 27-year-old Muskegon man was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.

Police are investigating a stabbing that occurred in Holland Township early Sunday. Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said police were called to the 300 block of Hoover Street at about 1 a.m. on reports of a fight occurring. Upon arrival, Garvelink said officers discovered a 20-year-old Holland man had been stabbed. The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Holland Hospital by AMR ambulance for treatment of his injuries.

The victim of a drowning reported Friday at Muskegon's Kruse Park has been identified as Pedro Contreras-Martinez, 32, of Wyoming, Mich., according to Muskegon police. Emergency personnel responded to a water emergency at the Lake Michigan park, 3090 W. Sherman Blvd., shortly before 6:30 p.m. A witness had reported seeing a man approximately 75-100 yards offshore waving his arms, then disappearing from sight, police said. The man was found unresponsive by rescue personnel, who brought him to shore and began performing CPR.

Michigan State Police said at least eight people were killed in seven separate traffic crashes during the Labor Day holiday weekend. Four of the eight victims were not wearing seat belts, and alcohol was a known factor in three of the eight fatal crashes, state police said. "These numbers are preliminary and only reflect those fatalities reported to the MSP as of noon today,' Capt. Harold Love, commander of the state police Traffic Safety Division. "The preliminary numbers show a decrease in fatalities from this same holiday period last year.'

The green ribbons tied onto their shoe laces was a tribute to Brenda Blahnik, the mother of Lakers' junior setter Emily Blahnik.

Both Spring Lake and Fruitport scored easy wins in their opening Lakes Eight Conference soccer contests of the season on Tuesday. The Lakers, who sit at No. 2 in the inaugural Division 2 state rankings, took on Orchard View and their star forward Zack Sutton and came away with a 4-0 victory. "I'm pretty proud of what we've done defensively, especially with Sutton getting such high praise early in the season,' said Lakers' coach Jeremy Thelen, whose team is now 5-0. "We wanted to set the tone early in the conference season.'

The Grand Haven Aerie 925 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 20 N. Second St., will host a two-, three- or four-wheel vehicle run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, to benefit Hospice of North Ottawa Community. There will be a donation of $15 per vehicle and $5 per passenger. This will be a self-guided tour/run. An auction will follow at the Eagles Club, with many items donated by area businesses.
