Taking invention to market topic of SLDL program

Taking an invention to market is the topic of a free presentation by Jan Mink at Spring Lake District Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. Mink is the president of Key Marketing LLC and a board member of the Muskegon Inventors Network. She will share her expertise on how to turn an invention into a profitable product. Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions on how to develop and market their innovative ideas.

Fashion’s Night Out exhibit to feature GH artist

As a participant in the third annual Fashion's Night Out, the Richard App Gallery, 910 Cherry Street S.W., is hosting an art/music/shopping event from 5-11 p.m. Thursday. The gallery event will feature new paintings from part-time Grand Haven artist Chris Protas; and Vermont artist Mikey Welsh, formerly of the band Weezer. The artist reception will run in conjunction with a pop-up store from AK Rikks, which will also be housed in the gallery. Beginning at 10 p.m., the Grand Rapids-based band The Concussions will play a live show to close out the night.

Holland painting exhibit has NYC/W. Mich. roots

An exhibition of new paintings by New York City and West Michigan artists opens Friday, Sept. 9, at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 E. Eighth St. The paintings will be on display at there through Nov. 5. Mike Coleman, Adam Dahlstrom, Derek Johnson, Tyler Loftis, Chris Protas, Dov Talpaz and Ellen Trumbo have shown as a group frequently over the past decade. Based in New York and West Michigan, these artists have worked together since meeting at art school in Greenwich Village in the mid-1990s.

Michigan Republicans rally to help recall target

Supporters, including other Michigan Republicans and business organizations, are mounting a campaign to defend state Rep. Paul Scott against a recall effort backed by the state's largest teachers union. Scott, a Republican from Grand Blanc and chairman of the House Education Committee, is the only state lawmaker in jeopardy of facing a recall election in November. He has until today to challenge the validity of signatures gathered against him and also has court cases pending in an effort to stay off the ballot.

Mich. Environmental Hall of Fame formed in Muskegon

A nonprofit group that wants to recognize people who work to help the state's environment has formed the Michigan Environmental Hall of Fame. The Muskegon Environmental Research and Environmental Society wants to honor Michigan individuals, other nonprofits, colleges and schools that have made a contribution to improving or preserving the environment.

First day of school: Seniors set the tone

Students spanned the spectrum of emotions this morning at Spring Lake High School. On a crisp, cool and sunny start to the school year, seniors mingled over breakfast in the parking lot, while freshmen scurried about the hallways in search of their lockers. Madeline Dekker was one of those freshmen. The 15-year-old transferred to Lakerland from Grand Haven this school year. "It's really scary because I don't know where my locker is,' said Dekker, who approached technology teacher Aaron Andres in the hallway to ask for directions.

Ferrysburg City Council to meet tonight

City Council will discuss an ordinance regulating peddlers when it meets tonight. Council will also host work sessions on the former City Hall building and the city's leasing policy. Council will also consider the possibility of leasing space at City Hall. Council is expected to approve a proclamation designating Oct. 15 as Community Wellness Day and to designate Councilwoman Rebecca Hopp as the city's voting delegate at the Michigan Municipal League annual meeting. The 7:30 p.m. meeting will take place at Ferrysburg City Hall, 17290 Roosevelt Road.

When Michigan coach Brady Hoke was hired in January, one of his first orders was to install countdown clocks inside Schembechler Hall. The clocks include digital readouts that serve as a daily reminder of the time remaining before the Wolverines face Big Ten foes Ohio State and Michigan State. But just because Michigan's annual nonconference game with Notre Dame isn't represented with a permanent timepiece doesn't take away from the significance of a rivalry that dates to 1887. "This is important as anything,' Hoke said Monday.

U-M game against Notre Dame a hot ticket

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon wishes he had 50,000 more tickets to sell for the first game under the lights at the Big House. Brandon says he has never seen anything like the demand for the prime-time game against Notre Dame on Saturday night. Michigan Stadium's official capacity is 109,901. It set an NCAA regular-season attendance record with 113,090 last year against Connecticut. Tickets were available still available Tuesday morning, with an online vendor selling them from $219 to $3,500 each.

Bloomquists to kick off library’s 2011-12 Sunday afternoon concerts

Ruth and Max Bloomquist will kick off Loutit District Library's third season of Sunday afternoon concerts at 2 p.m. Sept. 11. The Bloomquists have been making music together since they met in 1975 and discovered their shared love for songs made with acoustic instruments and featuring lyrics from the heart. They immersed themselves in folk, bluegrass, country, singer-songwriters and other acoustic music to create a sound and style of their own. The free monthly concerts are held in the library's upper-level lobby. The series runs through May 2012.

Authorities arrest man in case of impregnated girl, 11

Authorities in suburban Detroit said they've arrested a man who is charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl who became pregnant and recently gave birth. The Macomb County Sheriff's Department said 28-year-old Trevaun Brooks of Mount Clemens was found Monday evening at a home in the nearby community of Warren. Brooks is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct. He was expected in court today. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said Friday that Brooks was supposed to talk to investigators last week, but did not appear.
