Authorities in suburban Detroit are searching for a man who is charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, who became pregnant and recently gave birth. Trevaun Brooks of Mount Clemens is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said this morning that Brooks was supposed to talk to investigators this week but did not appear. The 28-year-old knew the girl's mother and had lived with them. The girl now is 12.

There was concern in the off-season that Grand Haven's varsity football team had lost too many offensive playmakers to graduation and some growing pains were in order. If anything, Thursday's 48-21 thumping of Traverse City West at Buccaneer Stadium eased those concerns and proved that seven new starters on that side of the ball have grown up in a hurry.

Spring Lake's passing game isn't clicking yet, but their run game - led by senior quarterback Keegan Wolter - was dominant against host Ludington on Thursday. Wolters ran for 196 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Lakers score their first victory of the season, 50-27, at Ludington High School. All but one yard of the Lakers' 410 total yards of offense came on the ground. Cody Berkobein added 99 yards on seven carries and two touchdowns, while T.J. Kriger tallied 70 yards on eight carries.

Grand Haven continued a recent trend on the volleyball court, going 2-1 at a home quad meet. The Buccaneers scored wins over Unity Christian (25-23, 25-14) and Spring Lake (25-19, 25-19) before losing to Forest Hills Northern (15-25, 25-19, 18-16). Veteran soccer coach David Hulings will soon be coaching both the boys and girls soccer teams at Western Michigan Christian High. He resigned earlier this week as the girls varsity soccer coach at Fruitport High School after 19 seasons. Hulings is in his seventh season coaching the WMC boys where his teams have won state championships in 2007 and 2010. He is the only girls coach Fruitport has had and he posted a 213-118-25 record with the Trojans. Hulings plans to expand his ministry at WMC.

Henni Campbell's four bosses at Grand Haven Area Public Schools shared a common trait. They were all visionaries, she said. Campbell, 65, who has been an administrative assistant to the superintendent for the past 25 years, officially retired on Wednesday. During her tenure with the Grand Haven school district, Campbell has worked with superintendents Joseph Zapytowski, William Dean, Rick Kent and Keith Konarska. Campbell said she enjoyed her time with each one of them.

Spring Lake placed first and Fruitport second in the Lakes Eight portion of Thursday's Fremont Invitational, which served as both an open invite and a league jamboree. Reeths-Puffer was the overall champion. The Lakers took second at 185, and Fruitport shot a 196. Elinor Adams paced the Lakers with a 90, followed by Chezney Peel with a 96, Tori Kihnke with a 98, and Karissa Raschke with a 102. Carly Hoekenga shot a 101 to lead the Trojans. Jenna Visniski shot a 105, Abbie McNitt a 106, and Kaylee McWilliams a 112.

Progress is being made in an attempt to obtain grant funding that would improve the look of several buildings along Washington Avenue in Grand Haven. City Planner Kristin Keery said the Michigan Strategic Fund board last week invited the city of Grand Haven to submit a full application for facade grant funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. She said it is a "positive sign' that the city has been invited to participate this far in the program.

A Muskegon man is facing charges including stalking and assault for breaking into a woman's home in Spring Lake Township. William Henry Nelson, 22, appeared in court on Thursday. Detectives said he broke into the victim's home early on Aug. 12. The woman injured herself while trying to get out of her house, but was able to get to a neighbor's home safely.

A Muskegon man is facing charges including stalking and assault for breaking into a woman's home in Spring Lake Township. William Henry Nelson, 22, was arraigned by video in 58th District Court in Grand Haven on Thursday on charges of first-degree home invasion, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct, aggravated stalking and larceny in a building.

A woman who was an accountant at Munson Healthcare in northern Michigan has pleaded guilty to embezzling $1.1 million from a hospital foundation. The government said Susan Morrison spent the money for her personal enjoyment and transferred it to the bank account of her former business, the Great Lakes Bear Factory. She pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court and will be sentenced on Dec. 8. Morrison worked at Munson for about 11 years. Her duties included paying payroll taxes and making deposits into employee retirement plans.
