Nancy O'Neill has been a Love INC volunteer since 2003 and she has seen her share of area residents in need of food. But the Grand Haven resident said she's never seen that need reach the level that she has witnessed in the past two years. "The need is great in these difficult times,' she said. Love INC and other area food pantries - The Salvation Army in Grand Haven and The People Center in Spring Lake - are finding their shelves devoid of food stock, especially protein foods.

Artists are are being given an opportunity to show their talents to the public in an ongoing art series being conducted at the C2C Gallery, 41 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven. The third event in the series took place Friday night and featured Ypsilanti-based pastel artist Shaun Williams. "I just got into the pastels four years ago and I've been heavily into it since then,' he said.

A Northwest Ottawa County demolition company has purchased the Sappi paper mill in Muskegon, which closed two years ago. Officials from Melching Inc. of Nunica announced Friday that they have purchased the former paper mill site in hopes of redeveloping the nearly 120-acre property on Lakeshore Drive, along the south shore of Muskegon Lake.

Spring Lake Wesleyan Church, 15550 Cleveland St., is hosting an evening of free family entertainment beginning with a show by illusionist Tom Coverly at 4 p.m. Sunday. Coverly, a Grand Rapids resident, is known as the Christian Criss Angel and David Blaine and has shared the stage speaking with many of the nation's most recognized speakers and Christian bands. Following Coverly's performance will be a concert, games and carnival concessions.

Fifty to 75 pounds of kitten food a week - that's how much Harbor Humane Society uses, and right now they are within a few days of running out. The local humane society is asking the community to help by donating non-colored canned and/or dry kitten food. Cash donations or gift cards to places that sell kitten food are also welcomed. Any and all donations are appreciated and no amount is too small, Harbor Humane Society officials said.

Spring Lake and Grand Haven schools had mixed results in the Michigan Department of Education's 2011 Top to Bottom list. All of the Spring Lake schools scored in the 90th percentile or better among schools across the state, but Grand Haven High School and Lakeshore and White Pines Middle Schools scored 87, 78 and 72, respectively. The Top to Bottom scores are based on a complex formula of state test scores in math, reading, science, social studies and writing, as well as graduation rates.

For Grand Haven High School lacrosse players Hillary Land, Sarah Shaw, Mackenzie Yoas, Mackenzie Klingenberg and Carlee Klingenberg, the summer of 2011 has been one to remember. The Grand Haven girls played on the Grand Rapids-based Oasis Lacrosse Club, coached by Aquinas College head coach Frank Rogers and Aquinas junior Kati Rogers. The team competed in three multi-state tournaments this summer, bringing home three first-place trophies.

I recently heard a statistic that the average golfer - who obviously makes much more money than I do - has spent several thousand dollars over the past five years on golf clubs, and about $100 over that same period of time on golf lessons. I find it ironic that so many people feel that an upgrade in equipment will fix their game, yet they ignore the glaring flaws in their swing.

Donning a blue and yellow flight suit, Bridget Fox fastened on her helmet, strapped herself tight inside the F/A-18 Hornet's dome-windowed cockpit and prepared herself for the flight of her life. When the Grand Haven Township woman gave the thumbs up, the jets on the U.S. Navy Blue Angels' blue and gold Hornet rumbled and the plane briefly hovered over the runway before it vertically shot up in the sky.

Two suspects who allegedly broke into a Grand Haven Township business on Friday morning are being linked to other crimes in the region, according to Ottawa County Sheriff's Department Lt. Mark Bennett. A 42-year-old and a 32-year-old were apprehended by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department in Marne after the suspects allegedly broke into Lake Cycles, 12200 West Olive Road at 1 a.m. Friday During the stop, officers discovered items believed to have been stolen from the Grand Haven Township store. The two individuals were taken into custody, police said.

The Grand Haven Buccaneers opened their 2011 season with a 35-10 win at Traverse City Central on Thursday night. Bucs quarterback Scott Staal threw four touchdown passes to Danny Cotter. Both local public libraries will be closed Sunday and Monday, Sept. 4-5, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Spring Lake District Library will also be closed on Saturday, Sept. 3. Both libraries will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 6: Loutit District Library will re-open at 9 a.m. and Spring Lake District Library will reopen at 9:30 a.m.

The annual Smith's Bayou Chili Cookoff is Saturday on Cecilia Lane, off 168th Avenue near West Spring Lake Road, in Ferrysburg. The event is open to the public and chili sampling begins at noon. Organizer Rebecca Hopp said there are 14 entries for this year's event. Tickets are $50 cents each or three for $1. All proceeds will be donated to The People Center of Spring Lake.

State police raided two medical marijuana dispensaries in Ann Arbor on Thursday, but said the operations weren't connected with a previous day's appeals court ruling that pot cannot be sold through private shops, police said. The MedMar clinic and the A2 Go Green Corp. both were raided about noon, and officers seized computers, files and other items, AnnArbor.com reported. The businesses had been under investigation for at least a couple of weeks, said Detective Lt. Wynonia Sturdivant of the Livingston and Washtenaw Narcotics Enforcement Team.
