The state said Thursday seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates have decreased in all of Michigan's 17 major labor markets. The Ottawa County jobless rate fell from 9.1 percent in July to 8.5 percent last month, while the Muskegon County rate dropped from 11.2 to 10.7. The figures for August were released Thursday by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget, and they reflect seasonal reductions in the work force. Fewer unemployed workers actively sought employment in August than in July. Summer hiring receded from a July peak.

The 100 (or more) Women Who Care group recently awarded its first grant of their second funding cycle to The People Center of Spring Lake. Approximately 320 women have signed commitments to support this endeavor, translating into more than $32,000 donated to The People Center. "This donation is amazing,' People Center Director Karen Reenders said. "It's given completely in the spirit of The People Center, which is ‘neighbor helping neighbor.''

With Grand Haven's Alyssia Land and West Ottawa's Lauren DeShaw sprinting toward the finish of the 400-yard freestyle relay Thursday evening, you never would have known that there was nothing tangible at stake. Land may have been touched out at the wall by the Panthers' DeShaw, but the heart that the Bucs' foursome showed in that final race put a smile on the face of Grand Haven coach Doug Thorne.

Authorities said a man charged in a rape investigation in Michigan has been captured in western New York. The Ontario County Sheriff's Department said deputies were tipped off that 42-year-old Timothy Seeman of Manton, Mich., was working at construction project and staying at a motel in Hopewell, 30 miles southeast of Rochester. Officials said Seeman attempted to flee on foot when he was located around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, but was quickly apprehended by deputies. He was charged with being a fugitive from justice and sent to Ontario County Jail without bail.

Visitors to Grand Haven's Farmers Market will be going to a temporary location in October. According to Kristen Klempel, manager of the market for the Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg, beginning Oct. 5 and running through the rest of the market season on Oct. 29, the Farmers Market will be located at the Grand Haven Municipal Marina. The move is due to construction at the Chinook Pier parking lot where the Farmers Market is usually located.

One man is dead after a one-vehicle crash early this morning off Holton-Whitehall Road in Muskegon County's Blue Lake Township. The accident happened shortly after midnight between Hyde Park and Automobile Roads. State police said the driver of a white Chevy Blazer went off the road, near an area residents call "Dead Man's Curve,' went down a 20-foot embankment and hit several trees. First-responders said the sport utility vehicle was smoking when they arrived, then caught fire with the man still inside.

The families of two young people who died after falling into a tank at a dairy farm in Barry County have filed wrongful death lawsuits against the farm. Lawsuits filed this week say Francisco Martinez, 17; and Victor Perez, 18, were overcome in July 2010 by fumes emitted by decaying molasses in the tank at Yankee Springs Dairy Farm.

The West Shore Chorus, featuring women who sing barbershop-style songs, will be presenting its fall show on Saturday called "At the Hop.' The chorus will be performing at 7:30 p.m. at the Howmet Theater, 304 S. Mears Ave. in Whitehall. Also featured in the show will be the quartet Four Man Fishin' Choir. Tickets are $15. All four of the Tribune's local prep soccer teams appeared in the latest Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association state rankings this week. Two of those teams will likely remain ranked after scoring wins on Thursday, while two others - Fruitport and Western Michigan Christian - could slip out of the rankings after suffering losses. The No. 7-ranked (Div. 1) Grand Haven Buccaneers team dominated O-K Red Conference foe Jenison on Thursday, 3-0.

Grand Haven's varsity golf showed improvement in its team score, but it wasn't enough to catch visiting Rockford on Thursday at Grand Haven Golf Club, with the Rams prevailing 203-216. Grand Haven coach Roger Glass was pleased to see Kristen Carlson shoot a 47, which was the Bucs' low round. In a battle to remain unbeaten in the O-K Red Conference, Grandville prevailed over visiting Grand Haven by turning in a stunning comeback - three wins in a row while facing do-or-die in a best-of-5 games match. Grand Haven coach Katy Walters said the ‘Dawgs achieved the feat by simply outworking the Bucs (21-9 overall, 2-1 O-K Red).

After being in place along the waterfront for nearly a year, Grand Haven resident Mike Westra's kinetic wind sculpture has been formally dedicated and lit up. The metal sculpture, which includes parts of the old stoplight poles from downtown Grand Haven, was installed in October 2010. It was dedicated and given nighttime lighting Thursday. It's located between the Snug Harbor restaurant and the Riverview shops, and is similar to other Westra designs.
