Eleven-year-old Ezekiel DeJonge can check off one of the items on his bucket list: running a marathon. The Spring Lake boy ran 1 mile in the Old Boys' Brewhouse Oktoberfest Kids Race on Friday night - prepping for today's 5K run and completing the 26 miles that are equal to a marathon within a year. "It's cool,' Ezekiel said. "I was finishing my marathon and I'm running a 5K (today).'

Spring Lake scored a 6-2 win over Comstock Park on Friday in boys tennis action. The Lakers were without several key team members, which bumped senior Nic Parnell, typically a fixture at No. 1 doubles, up to No. 1 singles. Parnell responded with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Max Bent. The Lakers' Gabriel Guzmam won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, while Sean Dusterwinkle won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

There were no "over-the-hill' balloons for Spring Lake resident Cathleen Pranger's 50th birthday celebration. Cathleen, an eight-year survivor of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), celebrated in style with a party hosted by her husband, Scott Pranger, on Sept. 3, that family and friends thought she might never see.

The next time you hear someone say they don't think their vote matters, ask the voters in Hesperia about it. Incumbent Hesperia Board of Trustee member Scott Kroepell and challenger Jake Hornbrook each received 78 votes in Tuesday's village election. Election law required the race to be determined by a drawing. Hornbrook drew the paper marked "elected,' which means Kroepell will lose his seat. The two men are also second cousins, and the race was just one vote away from ending in a three-way tie.

Area G.E.M.S. girls clubs will be kicking off new seasons on Monday. G.E.M.S. (Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior) clubs are relationship building clubs where girls make new friends and become part of a caring, small group. Members participate in craft activities, singing and creative movement, small group Bible lessons, active games, leisure activities and life skills, group service projects, and special events. The annual theme for all 800 G.E.M.S. clubs around the world this year is "Get Wisdom: Go for the Gold!'

Autumn arrives officially on Sept. 23 and brings with it the return of Music by the Fireplace at Spring Lake District Library. Free musical performances will be featured one Sunday afternoon a month during the school year. Audiences will be treated to a variety of music, from bagpipes and wind ensembles to jazz and bluegrass. Classical guitarist Jeff Dwarshuis will be performing at the library from 3-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25.

Ed Grafton, a Spring Lake attorney and author, will discuss his book, "Undertow: A Crime's Story,' at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum's Brown Bag Luncheon series on Monday, Sept. 26. It will be held at the library, 200 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven, at 11:30 a.m. Grafton, using the pen name Henry Granger, wrote about a 1933 bank robbery in Grand Haven, creating fictitious characters to help convey the story to the readers. Grafton will have copies of his book on hand to sell and sign. Participants are invited to bring their lunch.

Friday night, Andrew Sytsma was taking bites of salmon. This morning, he hopes the salmon are the ones biting. Sytsma, of Sparta, will join his dad, Gary Sytsma of Grand Haven, for their fourth and final salmon fishing tournament of the year. They spent Friday evening enjoying the scents and sounds at the eighth annual Fresh Catch Fish Boil along Grand Haven's waterfront. "This is our second year here, so I think that makes us regulars,' Gary said. "It's good food, good entertainment, and you see people you may only see once a year.'

Dirty dogs from throughout the Tri-Cities are invited to come clean at Harborfront Hospital for Animals from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. The "Oh You Dirty Dog Wash' will be held in the clinic's parking lot, 807 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake. Dogs will be shampooed, conditioned and towel dried, and receive a scarf or a bow as well as a dog treat. A bake sale will also be held in conjunction with the event.

The Coopersville & Marne Railway's Famous Pumpkin Train is celebrating its 22nd year. The 250-seat vintage passenger train is decorated for the fall harvest. It will run every Saturday and Sunday from Sept. 24 through Oct. 30. This is a family-friendly, non-scary fall event. Farms and fields, in their colorful splendor, pass by as The Great Pumpkin, Scarecrow and Little Crow entertain the passengers. Songs and jokes abound over the clickity-clack of the rails during the 90-minute round-trip. All cars are heated and each has a restroom onboard.

The city of Grand Haven has introduced a new government dashboard that aims to provide a glimpse into the health of the city and meet the requirements of the state's Economic Vitality Incentive Program. The Economic Vitality Incentive Program requires local government receiving statutory revenue sharing under Public Act 140 to create a Citizens' Guide to Finance and an Internet performance dashboard. "I am very much in favor of this (dashboard), and I am also in favor of the other report,' City Finance Director Jim Bonamy said.

Grand Haven Area Public Schools and Spring Lake Public Schools may be rivals in the sports arena, but the two districts teamed up in a friendlier competition on Thursday during the annual United Way Day of Caring. Michelle Thyfault, assistant director of development and communication of the Greater Ottawa County United Way, dreamed up a school swap for the annual volunteering event after a national United Way conference in May. She talked with both school district superintendents, who were thrilled with the idea.
