Tom Treutler's vision of introducing the sport of baseball to the city of Hanoi, Vietnam, has made remarkable strides in just a short three-year time span. Treutler, a Grand Haven native and 1986 graduate of Grand Haven High School, is the executive director of Vietnam Pony Baseball. He's also the head coach of the Hanoi Capitals, a squad he's coached in both Pony and Little League competition.

U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, compares the nation's debt and spending agreement to a baseball game. And he isn't about to say that Congress and President Barack Obama hit one out of the park. "It was a single. We got someone on base,' Huizenga said of the deal that prevented the federal government from defaulting. "It (budget deal) doesn't go far enough.'

Jim and Janet Anderson want to teach their daughters people skills, so they're rolling out the welcome mat. The Anderson family will be selling homemade door mats at the Coast Guard Craft Show, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Grand Haven's Central Park. "My objective is to get my kids around people,' Jim said. "It's like having a lemonade stand with a pretty cool product.'

The "Mighty Mac' came in to Grand Haven Monday afternoon with one commander and will be leaving Sunday with a new face at the helm. Command of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw was transferred from Cmdr. Scott J. Smith to Cmdr. Michael J. Davanzo during a ceremony at Escanaba Park on Wednesday afternoon. Smith, who has been commanding officer aboard the Mackinaw since May 2008, said he was honored to have been able to serve on the Cheboygan-based cutter. "I'm happy to report that I drove the heck out of that ship,' Smith said.

A 35-year-old Grand Haven Township resident has been arrested after allegedly breaking into an office and stealing from its safe. Police said the incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Monday at the Grand Haven Club Apartments, 14868 Lakeshore Drive. When employees reported to work at 9 a.m., they noticed the office and safe had been compromised, police said. Investigators from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said they located the male suspect on Tuesday after investigating and locating the suspect's vehicle.
