Dozens of people waded to shore and two were rescued by helicopter from a tour boat that was damaged by a wave in Lake Michigan near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, authorities said. The operator of the tour boat Pictured Rocks called for help shortly before 8:30 p.m. Monday after a wave reportedly went over the boat's bow, smashing a window and causing the boat's electronics to malfunction, the Coast Guard said. The boat had 61 people aboard. No major injuries were reported. Waves in the area were 2- to 4-feet high at the time, the Coast Guard said.

Volunteers for Tuesday night's clean-up event at the Grand Haven State Park beach will be treated to a celebration in downtown Grand Haven when the work is done. The beach cleanup will begin at 6 p.m. Volunteers are asked to meet at the Barefoot Wine tent at the state park, 1001 S. Harbor Ave. After the work, at approximately 7:30 p.m., volunteers ages 21 and older are invited to The Grill Room at the Kirby House, 2 Washington Ave., for the celebration.

Authorities said an 89-year-old woman found dead last week in a Grand Rapids-area retirement community apartment was strangled. Mary Morrison lived at the Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community in Cascade Township for 12 years. She was found dead July 19, and authorities on Monday met with residents and their families to discuss the case.

Authorities have identified a body found alongside a Lake County road and said the man apparently died of a gunshot wound. The body of 31-year-old Andrew Smith of Big Rapids was found early Saturday along a road near the boundary between Yates and Pleasant Plains townships. The site is about 4 miles southeast of Baldwin. The death was under investigation.

The Ottawa County Fair kicks off today with "Night of Destruction,' a grandstand event featuring Unique Motorsports, at 7 p.m. The 53rd annual fair features hundreds of free exhibits, flower shows, 4-H animal exhibits and more - with a carnival throughout the week - at 1286 Ottawa Beach Road on Holland's northside. Brent Alan, the fair's concession and vendor manager, said their goal is "affordable family fun.'

An open house will be held at the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. The open house at the preserve, located on Lake Avenue just west of the Memorial Causeway in North Muskegon, is part of the North Muskegon Days celebration. The day will include the making of pine cone bird feeders, the painting of "pet rocks,' tours of the preserve and a presentation by the Muskegon Nature Club at 1 p.m. There will also be refreshments served during the day.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has given nearly $185,000 in grants to help local governments monitor water quality at inland lake beaches. The state said in a release that 13 grants were awarded. Fourteen beaches will be monitored under a $23,000 grant to the Central Michigan District Health Department. Another $22,705 is going to the Ottawa County Health Department for eight beaches. The grants are funded through the Clean Michigan Initiative-Clean Water Fund.

About 75 teams came out for the Midwest Beach Volleyball Tour's last of three stops at Grand Haven on Saturday. "It's something that a lot of people enjoy,' said Stacey Johnston, who ran the amateur tournament. "(The tournament helps) the sport to grow and it's just fun to be in the sand and be at the beach and hang out.'

Jeff Lionheart may be on the verge of making it big in the music business, and that possibility could mean that the Grand Haven native will need to relocate to a bigger city. Lionheart, whose real name is Jeff Retzlaff, has tasted success in the past few months because of a song he wrote. The single of that song, "Winter Morning,' made it to No. 3 on the Spins Tracking System music chart last spring (which charts songs played on the radio) - propelling him ahead of such illustrious stars as Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry, Usher and the Black Eyed Peas.

A bartender was injured and a gunman arrested in separate incidents at the Holiday Inn early Saturday morning, according to Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Chief Roger DeYoung. Police were first called to the hotel at 12:20 a.m. when they received a call on an intoxicated man brandishing a firearm. The 36-year-old man from New Carlisle, Ind., was arrested for brandishing a firearm and resisting police, DeYoung said. A preliminary breathalyzer test indicated the man had a blood-alcohol level of 0.25 percent.

Two Robinson Township residents were taken to Holland Hospital following a two-car accident early Saturday evening at the intersection of Port Sheldon Road and 144th Avenue, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Diana Barriga and Cesar Barrios, both 54, were hospitalized in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Garvelink said.

A Hudsonville man is in serious condition following a two-vehicle accident late Saturday afternoon in Jamestown Township. Steven Dykema, 53, was taken to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids after the 5:24 p.m. collision, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. He suffered a head injury. A passenger in his car Amy Dykema, 42, also of Hudsonville, was in fair condition this morning at Butterworth, a hospital spokesperson said. They were both wearing seat belts.

Ottawa County Parks is partnering with the Shoreline Amateur Astronomical Association of Holland to offer year-round astronomy programs for both beginning and experienced stargazers. The next program is "Tour the Night Sky,' scheduled for Saturday, July 30, at Hemlock Crossing County Park. It will begin at 9 p.m.
