Police are searching for a woman who they say failed to turn over custody of her two children to their father at the Holland Department of Public Safety. Investigators said Wendi Carpenter had visitation with her daughter and son over the summer months and, by court order, was supposed to meet the children's father Tuesday at the public safety headquarters. When Carpenter failed to show up at the designated time and place, police began investigating. Police said they now believe Carpenter fled the state with the children.

Police are investigating the murder of a West Michigan native, whose body was found in parts in Texas. Authorities said they found the dismembered body of Laura Ackerson, 27, near Richmond, Texas - hundreds of miles from her current home in Kinston, N.C. Ackerson's family still lives in Ionia County, where she grew up.

Prosecutors say a criminal investigation is under way against some Muskegon County court workers accused of misusing county vehicles and taking part in recreational activities when they were supposed to be working. Muskegon County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Brett Gardner confirmed that the sheriff's office is investigating the allegations against the workers.

Cameron McNeil grew up sailing butterflies at the Spring Lake and White Lake yacht clubs, and has made a name for himself in sailing circles as one of the top MC Class sailors in the nation. This past weekend, McNeil, a 2000 Spring Lake High School graduate, got a chance to go up against the top sailors from across the country in an entirely different boat - the Laser. McNeil was one of 22 sailors invited to participate in the U.S. Sailing Singlehanded Championships, an annual regatta that pits the top sailors of singlehanded boats from across the country.

A painting with watercolors class will be held Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Spring Lake District Library, 123 E. Exchange St. Local artist Mary Sundstrom will demonstrate basic skills and techniques during this hands-on class. Participants will paint a still life and learn techniques like wax, leaf printing and resist. The class is open to those age 16 and older. Pre-registration is required as seating is limited. A series of recent thefts reported from beaches and cars in the city of Grand Haven and Grand Haven Township have prompted police to warn people to secure their valuables. "Don't leave valuables on the beach,' said Lt. Renee Freeman of the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. "Lock your cars.' Freeman said surrounding areas have been getting hit with "snatch-and-grab' thieves who run up to cars or beach towels and grab whatever is handy.

As Congress struggles to reach an agreement on raising the federal debt ceiling, some Michigan residents are sending letters demanding that senior programs be left untouched while others are telling lawmakers not to raise the ceiling at all. The conflicting messages came Tuesday as Congress and the White House raced to meet an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the ceiling and avoid a potential government default that could send the already weak economy into a swoon that damages the nation's credit rating.

Michigan growers expect the state's 2011 fruit crop to generally surpass last year's production. The state's cherry crop has been late this year because of the cool, wet spring - but above-average yields are in the forecast, The Detroit News reported today. Blueberries, peaches and grapes are also forecast to deliver heavy yields. The apple crop is projected at 25 million bushels, about the same as 1995's record.

For the second consecutive year, the 9th Coast Guard District is observing "Paddles Up Great Lakes' - an educational outreach campaign aimed at raising safe boating awareness among the region's paddlesport enthusiasts. The campaign began Saturday and culminates with the annual "Paddles Up Niagara' event on July 30 at Beaver Creek State Park in Grand Island, N.Y.

A Lake Michigan ferry is shut down temporarily for an engine replacement. The high-speed Lake Express Ferry makes two to three trips daily between Milwaukee and Muskegon. In a news release, the company said the ferry has four engines producing a total of 12,000 horsepower, allowing it to reach a speed of 40 mph.

The 1-year-old daughter of Michigan's Lt. Gov. Brian Calley went into cardiac arrest while being prepared for a heart procedure at a hospital. Ken Silfven, a spokesman for Gov. Rick Snyder, said in an e-mail this morning that Kara last was reported in stable condition Tuesday evening. She has undergone past surgery to address a heart defect, and was at an Ann Arbor hospital for a cardiac catheterization. Silfven said Calley and his family have received an outpouring of prayers and support following word of Kara's hospitalization.
