Construction is scheduled to begin Aug. 1 on the 10-foot-wide nonmotorized trail from Fruitport Road to 130th Avenue. Spring Lake Township Manager Gordon Gallagher said work will be conducted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. He said some work may take place on Saturdays. The targeted completion date is Oct. 7. Once completed, Gallagher said the project will include boardwalks, scenic overlooks, a wetland mitigation area and a trailhead at 144th Avenue.

Having been in development for several months, the Grand Haven Downtown Development Authority's branding project is on the horizon. Grand Haven DDA Executive Director Dana Kollewehr said the new branding project is expected to be rolled out in September. "We want to get that thing going,' she said. Grand Haven was selected by the Michigan Main Street program in January to take part in the rebranding services being offered by W. Designs. Boyne City, Clare and Niles were also selected to receive the branding services.

The Westside Lacrosse travel team - a squad made up of high school players from West Ottawa, Holland and Grand Haven Hhigh schools - has enjoyed a successful summer at tournaments across the Midwest. The team won the HIgh School Boys A Bracket at the Brewtown Showdown in Milwaukee on June 24-26; took runner-up honors at the Great Lakes Lacrosse Invitational in Kalamazoo on July 9-10; and will soon add to its tournament resume with a trip to the Cherry Bomb lacrosse tournament in Traverse City on July 29-31.

The Grand Valley State women's cross country and track and field programs left little doubt that the Lakers would be the best Division II running program in the country this year. For the third consecutive season, Grand Valley State has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Program of the Year, as released by the national office in New Orleans recently.

Authorities are investigating a reported fifth attack in a string of sexual assaults in and around downtown Ann Arbor. AnnArbor.com reported Friday that a 26-year-old Ypsilanti woman told police she was attacked late Monday night in a parking structure's elevator. The woman said she came forward after seeing media coverage of the sexual assaults and did not seek medical attention. Police said the sexual assault reports began July 15 and that each of the victims was alone at the time of the attacks.

A man accused of being the accomplice in the abduction and slaying of a 32-year-old Michigan woman has been sentenced to a year in jail and three years probation. The Kalamazoo Gazette reported Friday that St. Joseph County Circuit Judge Paul Stutesman announced Ricky Spencer's sentence in Centreville. Venus Stewart disappeared in April 2010. Her body has not been found. Stewart's estranged husband, Doug Stewart, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced in April to life in prison.

A veteran Grand Rapids disc jockey died two days after she was pulled from a pool at her home. Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital officials said Allison Harte died Thursday night after family decided to take her off a respirator. Her husband, Roger Dykstra, pulled her from the bottom of the in-ground pool at their Rockford-area home. Harte's real name was Prudence Dykstra.

The body of a Grant-area man missing since Saturday was found Thursday. The Newaygo County Sheriff's Department was dispatched for a possible motorcycle crash to Maple Island Avenue and South River Drive on Thursday night. The driver of the motorcycle, 39-year-old Walter Wojahn, was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members said Wojahn left for work in Spring Lake late Saturday morning, but never showed up. They had been searching for him since Saturday. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

About a dozen teenagers took to the dance floor while another dozen watched from the wings during an evening of swing dance fun Friday night at Spring Lake's Mill Point Park. "It was warm, but I think the rain earlier cooled things off,' said dance instructor Ben Terpstra, a student at Hope College. "It was a beautiful night.' All high school students are invited to the two-hour event, called "The Dance Project,' which runs from 7-9 p.m. every Friday. Refreshments are served.

Over the next month, the Northwest Ottawa Recreation Authority will be conducting a Recreational Needs Survey of the area. The survey area includes the cities of Grand Haven and Ferrysburg, Grand Haven, Robinson and Port Sheldon townships; and the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district. NORA officials say the survey will determine the wants and needs of the community. Surveyors will inquire about current satisfaction with facilities, fields and programs, as well as interest in creation of new facilities and expanded program options.

The "No Cigs for Our Kids' campaign partnered with law enforcement agencies from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, Spring Lake-Ferrysburg Police Department and the Holland Department of Public Safety last month to ensure stores do not sell tobacco to those under age 18. The 54 undercover tobacco compliance checks in June resulted in sales to an underage decoy at two Ferrysburg stores: the Reef Party Store and JD's Shoreline Super Stop.
