Grand Haven varsity football coach Mike Farley joked that "back in the stone age,' when he attended high school, the preparation for the upcoming football season would mean showing up a week prior to opening practice to begin marginal conditioning and weight lifting. The times sure have changed.

The Woman's Club of Grand Haven is seeking donations for its 56th annual Scholarship Book Sale, which will be held in the Woman's Club tent during the Coast Guard Festival Craft Fair, Aug. 5-6. Clean, gently used books, CDs and DVDs may be dropped off at Rosy Mound Elementary School, 14016 Lakeshore Drive in Grand Haven Township, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1-3 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 4. Textbooks and magazines will not be accepted. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund scholarships for area residents.

Louanna Welty, a Grand Haven resident and museum volunteer, will be reading the Native American story "The Birth of Nanabosho' as part of the Tri-Cities Historical Museum's "Our Woodland Ways' program on Wednesday, July 27. The 10 a.m. program will take place at the museum's Akeley location, 200 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven. This free program does not require advanced registration. Timothy Sleep is unable to perform at the GVSU International Carillon Concert Series, as was scheduled for July 17 and 20. The concerts will go on with new performers taking his place. Dennis Curry, carillonneur at Kirk in the Hills in Bloomfield Hills, will perform Sunday, July 17, from 8-9:30 p.m., during the 17th annual Cook Carillon International Concert Series on the Allendale Campus. Curry is past-president of The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America. He has often performed both of the GVSU carillons.

Kevin Bowling, the administrator of the 20th Circuit and Ottawa County Probate courts, was recently elected president of the National Association for Court Management. The association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice. With about 2,000 national and international members, it is the largest organization of court management professionals.

Mother Nature wasn't fooled Thursday night at the Grand Haven Community Center. She was honored - front and center stage on the model runway. French Academy of Cosmetology in Spring Lake hosted its annual student competition at the Community Center. The 32 pupils went wild with the Mother Nature theme - crafting models' hairstyles into flowers, animals and weather patterns. Their works were judged on creativity, difficulty, makeup and attire as each model paraded down the runway in true fashion show pace and style.

A record four-minute Township Board meeting last month prompted a discussion among Grand Haven Township officials earlier this week about possibly switching from bi-monthly meetings to monthly meetings. The board's June 27 meeting agenda included the approval of the previous board meeting's minutes and $45,244 of invoices, and authorize the sale of surplus equipment. There was nothing under old business or new business.

A man is recovering after he was hit by a passing car in Norton Shores on Thursday. The incident happened around 6:45 p.m. on East Broadway Avenue, near the intersection with Worden Street, according to a witness. The owner Ozzie's Party Store said a customer was leaving his business and was taking his purchases out to his car, which was parked on East Broadway. The customer was walking to the driver's side of his vehicle when he stepped into the path of another car.

The end of Washington Avenue is now more colorful thanks in part to the installation of new artwork on the back of the Waterfront Stadium bleachers. The Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority Preservation Committee recently installed murals on the back of the bleachers. The images came from historic postcards from the late 1800s and early 1900s that depict scenes from the Grand Haven community. "Our goal is to keep it up year-round,' said Dana Kollewehr, the authority's executive director.

Authorities said a man who brandished a board and later a handgun during an argument involving a group of people on a Kalamazoo street was beaten with the board. Police said they found the 36-year-old man with head wounds on Thursday night. He was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Witnesses told police the man had the board when he approached a group of people and got into an argument with them. After the board was taken from him he pulled out a gun, and one person from the group beat him over the head with it until he fell to the ground.

A special lighting district in the area of 152nd Avenue and Rich Street will be created with the approval Monday of two resolutions by the Grand Haven Township Board. The first resolution approved the special assessment roll for the lighting district, and the second resolution adopted the assessment roll and light installation. The light installation and first-year assessment totals $399. Each affected property owner will pay $79.

Looking back at it now, Kevin Patterson admits that the first Grand Haven Beach Vault was a nightmare. Complete with a John Deere Gator, a Bobcat leveling skid and a few shovels, Patterson and some coaching friends who shared his vision of an outdoor pole vaulting competition worked on trying to level off the sand at the Grand Haven City Beach until 1:30 a.m. When their challenge still wasn't completed the next day - the morning of the event - the crew were fortunate enough to track down a local worker on the beach with a front-end loader.
