Police in Grand Rapids said a 2-year-old boy has died after being struck by a pickup truck and the driver was stabbed following the accident. Grand Rapids police said in a statement that Javonni Conley was hospitalized after being struck Monday night, and later died. Preliminary information indicates that the child ran into the roadway and the 34-year-old driver wasn't able to avoid him.

State Rep. Amanda Price will be at Spring Lake District Library from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, to talk with constituents about their concerns. Price had to cancel a previously scheduled July 18 talk because of scheduling conflicts, the library's Lisa Donner said. Price represents the state House 89th District, which includes the Tri-Cities. Grand Haven City Council took its first steps Monday night toward hiring a director for the city's Department of Public Safety. Council approved an official recruitment profile that will be used to help search and select a new public safety director. City Manager Pat McGinnis said the next steps in the process involve figuring out where they want to post the job position and when it will be done.

With temperatures climbing into the low 90s and not much of a cooling breeze to speak of, the turf soccer field at Grand Haven High School was nearly unbearable to play on Monday. But dozens of young soccer players shrugged off the oppressive heat on the first day of the Lakeshore Premier Soccer Club camp, which will run all week. That means it's up to the players before hand, then the coaches during the event, to make sure that the heat doesn't lead to serious safety concerns.

A 16-year-old Kentwood girl was killed in a two-car accident late Monday afternoon near Coopersville, said Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. Gabriella Valente, the only occupant of her vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, Austin said. Valente was driving east on Garfield Street at about 5:39 p.m. when she failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of 48th Avenue, Austin said. The teen's 1997 Saturn was struck in the driver's door by a 1998 Ford van driven by Jason Silvas, 31, of Coopersville.

Ottawa County deputies said a 17-year-old girl was killed late Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash southeast of Coopersville. Investigators said the girl was driving east on Garfield Street when she ran the stop sign at 48th Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. A van going south on 48th Avenue ran into the driver's side of the girl's car. The Aero Med ambulance helicopter was put on standby to respond to the crash, but the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Having completed notifications of the next of kin, as well as debriefing immediate family members regarding the details of the search, the Coast Guard has released the names of two boaters who died and six others who were rescued Monday morning in Lake Michigan. The deceased are Suzanne Bickel, 41, and Mark Morley, 51, both of Saginaw. Rescued were Christopher Cummings, 16; John Dent, 50; Stan Dent, 51; Peter Morley, 47; Stewart Morley, 15; and Lee Purcell, 46.

The 17 year old pulled from the water died this morning. His family told WZZM 13 Dylan Osborne- Rozario was removed from life support about 8:30 a.m. and died about 11:30 a.m. He was a student at Orchard View High School in Muskegon County. Rescuers were called to the marina just before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday on a report of a possible drowning. A Coast Guard team was also called in, but by the time it arrived, rescuers had already pulled the victim from the water.

Survivors from a boat that overturned in Lake Michigan during the annual Chicago-to-Mackinac race say they're heartbroken that their skipper and another crew member died but are grateful to their rescuers. The 35-foot sailboat WingNuts capsized around midnight Sunday during a fierce storm about 13 miles northwest of Charlevoix. Skipper Mark Morley and crew member Suzanne Bickel died. Both were from Saginaw. A vessel called Sociable rescued six others from WingNuts.

A fire destroyed equipment belonging to a youth football club in Muskegon - two weeks before the start of practice. Investigators believe the Sunday morning fire may have been intentionally set. Laketon Township Supervisor Kim Arte said state police spotted the fire at Mullally Park from their helicopter. The fire destroyed a press box containing equipment for the Reeths Puffer Youth Football Club. Although the township has insurance to cover its loss, the club does not.

They beat the Americans for the title in a riveting final Sunday night, 3-1, on penalty kicks, after coming from behind twice in a 2-all tie. The star of the shootout was feisty goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori, who made two brilliant saves in the shootout. An effort to recall the state senator that represents Ottawa County has been given the green light to proceed. The Ottawa County Election Commission approved the most recent version of recall language filed by a Spring Lake man with a 3-0 vote at a hearing on July 13. That clears the way for the petitioners to circulate petitions in the state Senate 30th District, which includes all of Ottawa County and a small portion of western Kent County, with the goal to put a proposal before voters to remove Sen. Arlan Meekhof from office.
