A steady stream of children passed Sue Lavin's game at the 2011 St. Mary's Festival on Saturday afternoon - many of them stopping to try their hand at "PeeWee Pinball.' The game, she said, worked by having children launch a marble through a field of pins and bumpers, landing in a colored slot. The color determined the number of prize chips they won, which could be exchanged for toys at the prize booth.

By the Associated Press Betty Ford, the former first lady whose triumph over drug and alcohol addiction became a beacon of hope for addicts and the inspiration for her Betty Ford Center, has died, a family friend said Friday. She was 93. Mrs. Ford's death was confirmed by Marty Allen, chairman emeritus of the Ford Foundation. He did not comment further, and said he expected the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum would release information later.

It was a day of change for U.S. Coast Guard Sector Field Office Grand Haven on Friday, as the community said good-bye to outgoing Cmdr. Robert Hemp. During his farewell to the community and personnel of the U.S. Coast Guard in Grand Haven, Hemp thanked the men and women serving here. "No officer successfully completes a command tour without a crew committed to success,' he said.

The Spring Lake Township Board will discuss updates to a 35-year-old fire protection agreement between the township and the Village of Spring Lake at 7 p.m. Monday at Township Hall, 106 S. Buchanan St. Representatives from both municipalities have been meeting for more than six months to research the history and validity of the original fire service contract, which dates back to 1976. Under the updated agreement, there will be no increase in the $15,000 annual rate the village has paid to the township for fire coverage for the last 35 years.

After 11 years of service, Roger Cotner is stepping down from the Loutit District Library Board. In his letter of resignation to the board, the local attorney said "it has been a real privilege' to be associated with the library, and he felt it was "time for someone else to bring new and fresh perspectives to this important position.'

In an exercise room in the Mercy Health Partners Bladder Control Clinic, a group of mostly middle-age women did a series of exercises to help them gain control of what medical professionals say is a common problem. The women were gathered in a room of Hackley at the Lakes, 6401 Prairie St., for a session of Total Control, a class taught at the clinic aimed at strengthening muscles in the abdominal and pelvic region. The class also educates participants about good fluid intake habits and is aimed at women of all ages,instructors said.

No one was injured when a Park Township woman crashed her vehicle into the front of a Holland-area restaurant Friday afternoon, police said. Witnesses told police that Mary Jillson, 75, was attempting to back out of a parking space in the lot at Zoup!, 3435 W. Shore Drive, but instead drove forward. Police and firefighters responded to the restaurant shortly after 2 p.m. to find that Jillson, whose vehicle was about halfway through the front entrance area of the building, was trapped in her vehicle, police said.

When Sandra Shelley heard on the radio about the shooting of seven people in Grand Rapids Thursday evening, she was driving west to Muskegon on Interstate 96. Moments later, she and other drivers were diverted onto the Plainfield Avenue N.E. exit by two police officers who were standing near their car with their guns drawn, she said.

A motorcyclist died Thursday night after crashing on a curve in Norton Shores, police said. Thomas Westra, 59, of Fruitport, crashed on the curve of westbound Seaway Drive at Green Street at about 9:15 p.m. Police said he was pronounced dead at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon shortly after the crash. Witnesses told police that Westra had left the Pin Crest Bowling Alley in Fruitport to go for a ride with friends. Witnesses said the motorcyclists were seen in the area driving at high speeds.
