U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, will host a "town hall meeting' in Grand Haven on Wednesday to discuss the debt vote and other federal issues. The meeting at the Grand Haven Community Center, 421 Columbus Ave., is open to the public. It will begin at 7 p.m.

Claudia Hayes-Hagar, a long-time art educator who was a part-time lecturer at Hope College in art and education for 14 years, died on Sunday, August 8, at age 59 following a battle with cancer. She joined the Hope faculty in 1997, teaching courses in art and education with an emphasis on elementary art instruction in addition to teaching in the West Ottawa Public Schools.

The Township Board will revisit discussions on a fire service contract with the Village of Spring Lake at 7 p.m. today at Township Hall, 106 S. Buchanan St. Last month, the contract approval failed due to a tie vote. Clerk Carolyn Boersma was absent from the July 11 meeting, and is expected back Monday night to break the tie. The agreement, an updated version of the original 1976 contract between the township and the village, does not raise the $12,000 rate that the village has paid since the contract was first signed.

Despite rain on Tuesday and during the morning on Saturday, organizers of the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival said this year's event was a success. "Everything went as planned with the exception of the weather, but you can't control that,' Mike Smith, Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival executive director, said. Smith said the threat of rain and thunderstorms caused them to cancel some of the opening night events on Tuesday, but they were able to be rescheduled.

A summer full of hard work in the weight room and perfecting skills on the field during 7-on-7 passing camps will finally be rewarded today, as prep football teams across the state of Michigan open up their seasons with their first official practice. Over the next three days the Grand Haven Tribune sports staff will feature an early glimpse of area football teams at Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Fruitport - three programs that are coming off shared conference championships and playoff berths a year ago.

A Fruitport man and a Grand Rapids woman died after separate motorcycle crashes in the same area of a Grand Rapids freeway on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Donald Lavern Matthews, 56, of Fruitport was riding north on U.S. 131 at around 11 a.m. Friday when his motorcycle hit the back of a car that was stopped in traffic near Leonard Street, police said. Matthews was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Police said speed and alcohol were not considered to be factors in the crash.

The annual Coast Guard Festival Grand Parade and fireworks show will create several street closings in Grand Haven on Saturday. The parade participants will be staging in the residential area near Lakeshore Middle School, 900 S. Cutler St., beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday. All streets within a two-block radius will be closed to accommodate the staging area. No traffic will be allowed west of Eighth Street, on Washington and Franklin avenues, and on Clinton and Pennoyer streets.

Singer-songwriter Susan Leigh Picking, a former Grand Haven resident, will be performing at the "Tuesdays in the Park Series' on Aug. 9. Picking, and her accompanists Kaja Lill and Johnathon Swainston, will be performing from 7-8:30 p.m. at Grand Haven's Central Park. The concert is part of Picking's concert tour to promote her new CD, "Wonder in the Wonder,' which will be released later this month.

The fifth annual Michigan Pirate Festival will be centered at Loutit District Library next week. The festival features a loud blast on the first day as black powder specialist Tony Osterberg fires a time-period cannon and small arms in Grand Haven's Central Park at 6 p.m. Monday. This demonstration will be repeated at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Additionally, the pirate sail in will take place on Friday at 6 p.m. near Waterfront Stadium. The Michigan Pirate Festival in Central Park event begins, Saturday, August 13, 10 a.m. and lasts until 7 p.m.

Maura Krueger sat in the front row of the U.S. Coast Guard National Memorial Service clutching the hands of her husband, Dave, and son, Matt - who sat on each side of her. The three were there to honor their son and brother, Lt. Sean Krueger, who died while serving in the Coast Guard. "It means a great deal,' Maura said.

Tim Mangan has come from "the land down under' to serve up the gospel at a Northwest Ottawa County church. Senior Pastor Jeff Hackert is "transitioning' out of the lead role at Resurrection Life Church, 12900 U.S. 31 in Grand Haven Township, to make way for Mangan. Mangan officially becomes the church's senior pastor on Aug. 13. While Mangan and Hackert say they see eye-to-eye on Christian values and the goal of the nondenominational church, 27-year-old Mangan's accent is unmistakably Australian.

Vice Adm. Sally Brice-O'Hara, vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, noted the contrast of the 11th and 12th points for "The Walk of Coast Guard History' installed this year. The 11th point identifies the first fireworks show over Dewey Hill, shot off on Aug. 3, 1940; and the 12th point recognizes the first Coast Guard memorial service held in Grand Haven on Aug. 4, 1939.
