Harbor Transit, in cooperation with the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety, will provide a designated handicap parking area for special needs guests on Saturday for the Coast Guard Festival Grand Parade, carnival, waterfront show and Fireworks Extravaganza. The handicap parking area also provides handicap accessible busses located on Harbor Island, just north of Coho Drive and a short distance southwest of the drawbridge.

Tyler Sutton is just a year older than the Coast Guard Festival's annual downtown car show, but the Grand Haven teen was dreaming of seeing a car more than twice his age on Sunday. Sutton, 18 - wearing a wool cap and black T-shirt - said he's attended the festival's car show for many years. He doesn't yet have his own car. "Wish I had the money for it and I'd have one,' Sutton said as he checked out a 1967 Chevy Impala SS. "If I had my choice out of this, probably a ‘69 Chevelle.'

A former Ludington library employee who was fired in 2008 for writing a book that describes a range of unpleasant patrons is suing. The federal lawsuit claims "Library Diaries' author Sally Stern-Hamilton was "fired for engaging in protected speech.' in Grand Rapids. Using the pen name Ann Miketa, Stern-Hamilton wrote the book she described as a fictional account based on her on-the-job experiences.

It's been long overdue for Don Roberts and his wife Carolyn to compete at the Coast Guard Festival Run. The Lakeland, Fla., residents and Battle Creek natives have quite the running log: Don, 79, said he's been running competitively for 33 years, while Carolyn, 77, has 25 years of experience. Even with his health failing, Larry Rueger wanted his last days filled with what he loved the most - inspiring young men in the game of football. Battlling kidney disease, Rueger was still a presence at Fruitport's football training this summer, lending his expertise at motivating in the weight room or helping out in any way he could on the field. The longtime coach passed away Sunday morning at the age of 70.

The Muskegon Museum of Art will host Salon Thursday, a free social event for artists and art lovers, from 5:30-8 p.m. Aug. 4. Local artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to bring up to two pieces of their artwork to display for the evening. Artwork in myriad styles and media will be on display. Salon Thursdays are intended as a forum for discussion, critique and networking between artists and admirers. There is no fee for participating artists. Artists must take their artwork with them when they leave the event.

Authorities said a boat struck and killed a woman who was swimming off her own anchored boat on Saturday. Hillsdale County Undersheriff William Whorley said the accident happened about 2:40 p.m. in Bear Lake. It's in Cambria Township, about six miles southwest of Hillsdale and about 12 miles north of the Ohio line. According to Whorley, 49-year-old Cynthia Hiszak of Temperance was out boating on the lake with her husband, James. The undersheriff said a boat driven by 48-year-old James Jonassen of Hillsdale struck Hiszak and then the couple's boat.

Hundreds of kids, mascots, dogs, horses and pirates moved along Franklin and Washington avenues to the beat of drums and the wail of sirens on Saturday. Thousands of spectators watched as 51 parade entries walked, drove, biked and boarded through the 10-block route of the Coast Guard Kids Parade.
