Two sports new to the Spring Lake Heritage Festival lineup were introduced to participants in Central Park Saturday morning. Around 40 people gathered at the tennis courts in Central Park for an of Pickleball, said Jimmy O'Hearn, who gave the demonstration. Some stayed and played a few rounds of the game while, in the baseball diamond nearby, a group of people clad in kilts played an entirely different sport - the sheaf throw.

A 24-year-old Holland man is in custody after fleeing the scene of an accident early this morning, police said. An Ottawa County Sheriff's patrol car came upon a car that had crashed into a utility pole on Butternut Drive north of James Street shortly after 3 a.m., Ottawa County Sheriff's Sgt. Keith Garvelink said. As the deputy approached the scene, he saw two people run away from the car. The driver was found later near 136th Avenue and James Street with the help of a K-9 unit. He was taken into custody. His passenger, who also fled, was not found, Garvelink said.

A 40-year-old Holland man was hospitalized Saturday after crashing his motorcycle into a guard rail along the southbound U.S. 31 off ramp to Spring Lake, police said. Wilson Erasmo Canel-Torres was riding with four other friends shortly after 5:30 p.m. when he lost control on the off ramp and crashed, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police officer Adam Van Dis said. The crash occurred where the off ramp curves before passing under U.S. 31. Chris Brissette, one of the riders, said that he and the others were headed for Grand Rapids when the accident occurred.

Back-to-back solid outings helped Spring Lake's varsity boys golf team place sixth at this past weekend's Division 2 state meet, held at Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing. The Lakers shot a 307 in Friday's opening round, then carded a 311 in the second round on Saturday for a team score of 618.

Denny Dryer sailed Frank Lloyd Starboard to victory in the Grand River Sailing Club's annual Double Handed Distance Race on Saturday. Dryer and his crew finished the race in a corrected time of 1 hour, 25 minutes, 53 seconds. Second was Avanti, captained by Buzz and Sherie Russell, in a time of 1:27.47. Tom Morell's Surface Tension was third at 1:42.48, while John Campbell's Peggy Dash II placed fourth at 1:50.10. Fifth was Atomic Dog at 1:50.57, while Jack Kelley's CC Rider was sixth at 1:59.14.

The West Michigan Whitecaps ended the first half of the 2011 season with a 13-inning marathon at Fifth Third Ballpark, ultimately losing to the Lake County Captains, 10-5, in front of a Father's Day crowd of 6,925. West Michigan (32-37) missed out on the series sweep with the loss, but still heads into the All-Star break with 11 wins in their last 15 games. The Whitecaps held four separate leads on Sunday afternoon, but could not pull away as Lake County (28-41) rallied back to snap their 10-game losing streak.

Village Council is expected to decide tonight whether or not to collaborate with Spring Lake Township and the City of Grand Haven on planning and zoning services. The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Barber School, 102 W. Exchange St. Village Community Services Director Kathy Staton retired in May. She was in charge of code compliance, zoning matters and also attended monthly Village Planning Commission meetings.

Elizabeth Wertenberger, who competed as Miss Southwest, was crowned Miss Michigan 2011 on Saturday night at the Frauenthal Center in Muskegon. Elizabeth Hawthorne, a former Grand Haven-area resident, was named third runner-up. She also won a $1,000 Miss America Community Service Award. Hawthorne, 20, now lives in Clarkston and was named Miss Oakland County last summer. Kelly Owes, Miss West Michigan, was first runner-up; and Emily Kieliszewski, Miss Tip of the Mitt, was second runner-up.
