Grand Haven High School junior Alan Zeiler wants to go into Navy law enforcement. Recent GHHS graduate Hailey Greenbauer is also interested in a career in law enforcement, with possible aspirations of working in New York City. In the meantime, the two teens were having fun being introduced to various aspects of those careers while attending the fourth annual Teen 911 Academy this week.

Corrina Beak knows the real foundation of her new home isn't just concrete and re-rod - it's family and community. Beak, 38, a single mom, was surrounded by friends, family, neighbors and volunteers when her Habitat for Humanity home was dedicated on Thursday evening. Beak's home is the second of three that the Tri-Cities Area Habitat for Humanity is constructing this year on Branmar Woods Court, north of River Street and the 50th home the local Habitat organization has brought into being.

The starting linebacking unit for the West squad in Saturday's 31st annual Michigan High School Football Coaches Association's East-West All-Star Game is a clear example of the strong talent level from the O-K Red Conference. Led by Grand Haven's Dalton Stenberg, each of the team's starting linebackers hail from schools in the conference, which also includes West Ottawa's Desmond Morgan and Rockford's Brett Egnatuk.

Extreme sports fans will get a chance to see some of the area's best skateboarders and BMX riders on Saturday as the AGA Cup visits the Grand Haven Skate Park. The event begins at 4 p.m. at the skate park, which is located at the Tri-Cities Family YMCA, 1 Y Drive in Grand Haven. Event organizer Kurt Luttermoser explained that the event follows a jam format, where heats of four or five skateboarders or BMX riders take to the course for a 30- or 45-second performance.

The Detroit Pistons have chosen Kentucky guard Brandon Knight with the eighth pick in the NBA draft. Knight averaged 17.3 points per game as a freshman last season for the Wildcats. He joins a Detroit team trying to rebuild after missing the playoffs two straight seasons. The Pistons went 30-52 in 2010-11, and coach John Kuester was fired. The team hasn't hired a replacement. Detroit does have a new owner. Tom Gores completed a deal to purchase the team from Karen Davidson less than a month ago.

Counterpart will meet at noon on Wednesday, July 6, at the Holiday Inn, 940 W. Savidge St., Spring Lake. The meeting will be a mini-quilt "show and tell.' Members and guests are invited to bring a handmade quilt and tell everyone about it. Quilters are also invited to bring pictures of other quilts they may have done.

Ottawa County Marine law enforcement officers will participate in Operation Dry Water and will be out on the water on Saturday looking for boaters whose blood alcohol content exceeds the state level. Operation Dry Water includes increased marine patrols, as well as boater education. Impaired boaters can expect penalties such as, fines, jail and loss of boating privileges.

Despite losing its headlining acts, the Harbor Island Sunfest will still be held on Saturday. Lifehouse, an alternative rock band, and American Idol contestant Chris Medina had originally been lined up to play the festival, but canceled due to scheduling conflicts, said Dave Fritz, president of the Grand Haven Eagles and festival organizer. Ticket holders have the option of getting a refund from where they purchased the tickets, or holding onto them for access to a V.I.P. section directly in front of the stage, said Eagles' secretary Dean Nash.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety is joining law enforcement agencies across the state for a Fourth of July holiday crackdown on drunk drivers. Motorists will see increased patrols beginning July 1 through July 10 in Grand Haven. Local law enforcement officers said they will take to the streets working to prevent drunk driving injuries and deaths by arresting impaired drivers.

In a mathup that could be labled the established champion against the up-and-coming challenger, Charlevoix native Maureen Whitehead will look to defend her SLIT title in the Championship Flight, while West Olive resident and 2009 Grand Haven High School graduate Collette Hansen will be seeking her first - in just her second ever apperance at the 90th annual women's match play tournament.

Grand Haven senior Aliina Weykamp and Spring Lake senior Katie Smith each earned second-team all-state girls soccer honors for their outstanding seasons this past spring. Weykamp, who has committed to play soccer at the University of Illinois next year, was a four-year starter for the Bucs.
