Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, a summer school of the arts located on a 1,300-acre campus in Michigan's Manistee National Forest, is marking its 46th season with capacity enrollment. Of the record 5,412 students enrolled, nearly 4,500 hail from Michigan, leading to Blue Lake's designation as the state's largest provider of arts education to children and youth. The remaining students represent 34 states and eight foreign countries.

Coming off a successful debut, the Grand River Kayak race added new attractions in its second year and race organizers were pleased with the response. The race was held Saturday with ideal weather for the field of competitiors.

A boy playing alone on a rope swing in his yard in Allegan County has died after the rope apparently became tangled around his neck. Police said Anthony Reyes was found Tuesday afternoon by family members outside his home in Ganges Township. State police said the rope was tied to a tree branch and used by the family's children. Authorities said the boy was 8 or 9 years old. He was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said the boy's death appears accidental, but it remains under investigation.

More than a dozen pet rats were found dumped in a park in Ludington. The Ludington Daily News reported 11 live rats and two dead ones turned up Monday afternoon in Copeyon Park. Mason County Animal Control Officer Joe Marion and Lakeshore Animal Friends volunteer Cassi Johnson collected the live rats, and city workers removed the dead ones. Officials were looking for homes for the animals. Marion said someone noticed bedding and exercise wheels dumped in the park and contacted animal control earlier in the day.

The Tri-Cities Family YMCA will host a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. The drive is being organized by Michigan Blood - an independent, nonprofit organization that provides blood and blood products for hospitals across Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The blood drive will take place at the YMCA, 1 Y Drive in Grand Haven, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Todd Whiteman, a Holland city councilman since 2009, has been named executive director of Disability Network/Lakeshore. The Holland-based disability information and advocacy organization serves Ottawa and Allegan counties. Whiteman, 38, succeeds founding executive director Ruth Stegeman, who left in December after guiding the nonprofit organization from its inception in 1992.

After hearing from a resident who opposes the proposal, the Grand Haven Township Board on Monday tabled two resolutions that would have set an assessment and authorize a street light installation in a rural area. A special assessment lighting district in the area of 152nd Avenue and Rich Street has been proposed.

The Michigan Maritime Museum will celebrate its 30th Classic Boat Show on Saturday. Among the featured exhibits will be the Duchess, a 1904 gas launch from Gull Lake; Norman, a 1956 utility Chris Craft from Holland; and Babe, a Rhodes 27 sailboat from Chicago. The steamboat Willie from Saugatuck is anticipated to be in attendance.

Loutit District Library's 2011 summer reading clubs - "One World, Many Stories' for children and "You Are Here' for teens - kicked off this week. Children of all ages and teens are invited to read books, attend special events, win prizes and become eligible for a grand prize drawing at the end of the program. Sign up began this week in the youth wing of the library, 407 Columbus Ave. The program continues through July 29.
