During her time spent at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, eight year-old Greta Goszkowicz of North Muskegon has collected thousands of colorful beads, signifying any achievement - big or small - in her battle against lymphoblastic leukemia. The beads, in many cases, signify courage after Goszkowicz has successfully gone through medical procedures such as chemotherapy, a spinal tap or blood transfusion. Or they may reflect special people that have visited her in the hospital or new friends she has made.

Jack Kevorkian, the retired pathologist who captured the world's attention as he helped dozens of ailing people commit suicide, igniting intense debate and ending up in prison for murder, has died in a Detroit area hospital after a short illness. He was 83. Kevorkian, who said he helped some 130 people end their lives from 1990 to 1999, died about 2:30 a.m. today at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, close friend and prominent attorney Mayer Morganroth said. He had been hospitalized since last month with pneumonia and kidney problems, Morganroth said.

A Fruitport man accused of killing a swan with his personal watercraft said it was an accident, but dozens of witnesses disagree. "Everybody saw it wasn't an accident,' said Jennifer Ransom, who witnessed the incident from Pomona Park in Fruitport. "It was completely intentional.' "According to numerous witnesses, this incident did not have to happen,' Muskegon County Prosecutor Tony Tague said. Timothy Graves ll, 23, has been charged with unlawfully taking a protected animal.

Authorities said they're still working to identify skeletal remains of a woman found in April at a vacant property in southwestern Michigan. The Kalamazoo Gazette and the Battle Creek Enquirer reported that the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department on Thursday said that the remains found April 28 in Comstock Township near Kalamazoo weren't those of three missing area women.

Trevor Tidswell began his senior season of athletics with a bang, and the closed the same way on Thursday at Spring Lake High School. Tidswell, a Lakers' standout this year in football, basketball and track and field, was one of two student-athletes awarded Spring Lake's top athletic honor, the Len Fase Memorial Trophy, along with the female recipient, Rosie Seitz. The duo received individual trophies commemorating the honor at the school's awards ceremony honoring the best and brightest in academics and athletics.

The Lakers and the Trojans each scored victories in Thursday's Division 2 district semifinal round, setting up a showdown between the two rivals in Saturday's district championship game. A dispute involving the city and property owners on 1160 Highland Drive regarding a retaining wall has been resolved with an agreement signed today by Ottawa County Circuit Judge Ed Post. "I think the end result will be something that the neighbors and homeowner will be happy with,' Mayor Roger Bergman said. Bergman said one of the best things about the situation was that the neighbors came together - and did it in a way to resolve the dispute.

Western Michigan Christian's boys golf team won its fourth consecutive Division 4 district title, besting runner-up Manistee Catholic Central by 17 strokes. Three-time all-state senior Collin Breit was event medalist with a two-under-par round of 69 at Manistee Golf and Country Club. The No. 1-ranked Warriors also received a 73 from Jon Cook, a 76 from Sam Vos and a 77 from Alec Breit. Devin Kohn carded a season-best 84 for WMC, which shot a team score of 295. The Warriors will participate in next Friday's regional competition at St. John's.

The second season of the Sunday Art Market, a juried weekly show of established and emerging artists from West Michigan, opens June 5. The market will be under the green canopy next to Chinook Pier, at Harbor and First streets, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday through Sept. 11.
