Trevor Tidswell began his senior season of athletics with a bang, and the closed the same way on Thursday at Spring Lake High School. Tidswell, a Lakers' standout this year in football, basketball and track and field, was one of two student-athletes awarded Spring Lake's top athletic honor, the Len Fase Memorial Trophy, along with the female recipient, Rosie Seitz. The duo received individual trophies commemorating the honor at the school's awards ceremony honoring the best and brightest in academics and athletics.

For the third time in a month, Spring Lake and Fruitport will meet on the soccer field, this time with their seasons on the line. The Lakers and the Trojans each scored victories in Thursday's Division 2 district semifinal round, setting up a showdown between the two rivals in Saturday's district championship game. That contest will be played at Sparta and will begin at 2 p.m.

A dispute involving the city and property owners on 1160 Highland Drive regarding a retaining wall has been resolved with an agreement signed today by Ottawa County Circuit Judge Ed Post. "I think the end result will be something that the neighbors and homeowner will be happy with,' Mayor Roger Bergman said. Bergman said one of the best things about the situation was that the neighbors came together - and did it in a way to resolve the dispute.

Western Michigan Christian's boys golf team won its fourth consecutive Division 4 district title, besting runner-up Manistee Catholic Central by 17 strokes. Three-time all-state senior Collin Breit was event medalist with a two-under-par round of 69 at Manistee Golf and Country Club. The No. 1-ranked Warriors also received a 73 from Jon Cook, a 76 from Sam Vos and a 77 from Alec Breit. Devin Kohn carded a season-best 84 for WMC, which shot a team score of 295. The Warriors will participate in next Friday's regional competition at St. John's.

The second season of the Sunday Art Market, a juried weekly show of established and emerging artists from West Michigan, opens June 5. The market will be under the green canopy next to Chinook Pier, at Harbor and First streets, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday through Sept. 11. Displays will include fine art and high-end crafts such as pottery, metal works, photography, jewelry and textiles. There is a nominal fee for participating. The public is invited to join parks staff and the Friends of Ottawa County Parks for a preview of Grand River Ravines from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 9. The preview will allow visitors to view this newly acquired property, including the house that will be available for rental in the future. Refreshments will be provided. Two Spring Lake children got to experience the magic of Walt Disney because of Make-A-Wish trips. Ashleigh Dorman, 9, and Clayton Dorman, 5, both have cystic fibrosis. Ashleigh was diagnosed with the disease at age 3 - after her mother, Alice, took the girl to the doctor because of a digestive problem. After going through several procedures, Ashleigh was diagnosed with CF.

Riding a five-game winning streak, Spring Lake's varsity softball team was looking to make a statement going into Wednesday's make-up doubleheader against Newaygo. Instead, it was the Lions who made an emphatic statement, thumping the Lakers in both ends of the twin bill, 16-1 and 10-2. The pair of wins helps Newaygo leapfrog Spring Lake into third place in the final Lakes Eight Conference standings and leaves Lakers' coach Bill Core wondering how his team will respond in Saturday's district tournament.

The West Michigan Whitecaps nearly treated a Wednesday night crowd of 5,067 to a thrilling comeback victory at Fifth Third Ballpark, but their ninth-inning rally fell short in a 3-2 loss to the Quad Cities River Bandits. West Michigan (21-32) was held scoreless through the first eight innings before roaring back in the final frame, eventually losing for the fourth time in their last five games. Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the ninth, the Whitecaps refused to go down quietly.
