Electric rates will be going up for customers of the Grand Haven Board of Light & Power. The BLP Board of Directors on Thursday adopted its business plan for the next fiscal year, which includes an average increase in its electric rates of 2.4 percent, effective July 1. The increase will add about $1.44 per month, or 1.85 percent, to the average residential customer's electric bill - and contribute $780,000 in revenues to the BLP.

Charles Jacobs pleaded to the Grand Haven Township Board on Monday that a street light is needed at the corner of Rich Street and 152nd Avenue for safety reasons. "The crime is bad, the speeding is bad,' said Jacobs, who has lived in his house on 152nd Avenue for 40 years. "My home is for sale because the paradise is gone.' The Grand Haven Township man is one of five property owners in that area who signed a petition for a street light special assessment district.

The Hope Summer Repertory Theatre's 40th season will be full of music, comedy, laughter, life lessons and sentimentality. The season begins June 17 and runs through Aug. 13 at three Holland locations: DeWitt Theatre, the Knickerbocker Theatre and the HSRT Studio Theatre.

A former Ferndale police officer has been ordered to serve a minimum of about six years in prison for sexually assaulting a girl age 11-13. Thomas Cupples didn't make a statement Thursday, but his attorney denied his client had engaged in any wrongdoing. Charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, Cupples was convicted earlier this month of two counts of the lesser offense of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Two minutes into Grand Haven's boys lacrosse team's regional quarterfinal game against heavily-favored Rockford and the Buccaneers led the Rams 2-0. In fact, the Bucs scored on their first two shots of the game, and they carried a 2-1 lead into the end of the first quarter. But the second quarter was all Rockford as the Rams poured in eight consecutive goals, paving the way for a lopsided 15-3 victory over the Bucs. Rockford moves on to face Holt while Grand Haven sees its successful season come to a close.

The Michigan Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether a defendant's right to confront a witness was violated when two out-of-town witnesses testified by video in a Kent County trial. The state appeals court in January threw out the sexual-assault conviction of James Buie. He said it "didn't feel right' to have witnesses testify from outside the courtroom. The witnesses were experts who were in Detroit and Virginia. Buie's defense attorney agreed to their appearance by live video because she still could cross-examine them.

Athletes from Spring Lake and Fruitport's varsity girls track teams proved they can compete just fine against competitors in larger Division 1 schools. Spring Lake standout sophomore Brittany Beeler ran to two individual victories and also was a member of the Lakers' victorious 3,200-meter relay squad, and Fruitport also had a pair of first-place finishes at the 33rd Meijer West Michigan Track Invitational at Reeths-Puffer High School. The meet is a collection of the best track athletes throughout the greater Muskegon area.

The observance of Memorial Day in Grand Haven will begin with a special church service on Sunday night. The Sunday Evening Memorial Service at St. John's Lutheran Church, 527 Taylor Ave., will begin at 6 p.m. Led by the church's pastor, the Rev. Dieter Haupt, the service will conclude with the sounding of "Taps.' The offering will be donated to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.

The Breit brothers from Western Michigan Christian both carded rounds under par Thursday at the Lincoln Golf Club, but Reeths-Puffer had all four golfers shoot in the 30s to win the triangle match over WMC, 152-153. Montague finished at 207. WMC senior Collin Breit was match medalist with a two-under par 34 while sophomore Alec shot a 35. Sam Vos had a 40 and Jon Cook a 44 for the Warriors. GH SOFTBALL SHUT OUT Grand Haven's varsity softball team suffered a 9-0 loss at the hands of Holland Christian on Thursday.

Saturday marks the opening of bass season on the Great Lakes and all inland waters except for Lake St. Clair, St. Clair River and the Detroit River, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Opening day is June 18 on the remaining waterways. The early catch and release season has been very good, so the opener should be strong as well, the department said in its weekly fishing report. SOUTHWEST LOWER PENINSULA St. Joseph: Boats are heading out when they can but the fish are scattered. No word on perch.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for portions of central, south-central, southwest and west-central Michigan - including Ottawa County - through tonight. A southwest-to-northeast-oriented band of light to moderate rain, with some pockets of heavier rain, will occur today. This is in addition to significant rainfall that fell across portions of southwest Lower Michigan on Wednesday. It will result in the potential for some flooding. Steadier rain today will taper off to light rain showers tonight, before ending early Friday.
