It has been nearly 177 years since the first people began their lives in Grand Haven - and, with that much history, there is bound to be some mystery. The Gathering Research and Stories of Paranormal Phenomena Group will be hosting walking tours of Grand Haven on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15. They will guide guests along the downtown area and sharing some of the area's rich history and exciting mysteries. GRASPP will share stories about shipwrecks, uninvited and surprising "visitors' to local establishments, and more.

"Detroit's Jazz Age' is the inspiration for the performance of classic Detroit jazz music at Spring Lake District Library from 3-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. Sax master George Benson will be accompanied by musicians Jim Cooper, Joe Oprea and Mike Van Lente. Each song will be introduced by WBLV-FM jazz expert Lazaro Vega. The program is free and the public is invited to attend. It is funded in part by the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Grand Haven High School juniors and seniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher for a minimum of six trimesters are invited, along with their parents, to an open house in the school rotunda's from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12. Qualifying students will receive a letter or pin during the reception. It will also feature music by Go-Tak and refreshments.

Michigan utility regulators say natural gas customers should see slightly lower bills this winter because of falling prices, while customers who rely on propane and heating oil probably will pay more than last winter because of higher crude oil costs. The Michigan Public Service Commission released its winter energy appraisal Thursday. The commission forecasts adequate energy supplies this winter and normal temperatures.

Grand Haven High School will host a marching band invitational starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at the school's Buccaneer Stadium. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens, and free for children under age 5. Athletic passes do not apply for this event. Fremont will start off the performances of Class C bands at 6:15 p.m. They will be followed by Montague at 6:30 p.m., Shelby at 6:45 p.m. and Whitehall at 7 p.m.

Local liquid will be on tap Saturday at the second annual VanderFest Pints of Fall, a celebration of Michigan breweries and hard cider makers. The event - with food, live music and hand-crafted drinks - will run from 4-10 p.m. at Vander Mill, east of Spring Lake at 14921 Cleveland St. All proceeds will benefit the Holland AMBUCS chapter.

Spring Lake's varsity boys tennis team is heading to the state meet for the ninth consecutive season after placing second at Thursday's Division 3 regional meet, hosted by the Lakers. Petoskey won the regional title with 30 points, taking first place in six of the eight flights. Spring Lake and Cadillac tied for second with 21 points, also earning state finals berths. Comstock Par was third in the nine-team event with 10 points. Fruitport was seventh with two points.

High wind and waves last week caused debris to wash up on the Grand Haven south pier, leaving wooden obstacles between the lighthouse and foghouse structures. "No, it's not an ArtPrize entry,' Grand Haven City Manager Pat McGinnis said. "Yes, it is driftwood.' According to McGinnis, the wood debris likely washed up on the south pier last week during high wind, waves and storms that occurred over Lake Michigan.

Firefighters extinguished a fire this morning at a home under construction in the Albee's Cove subdivision, near 144th Avenue and Mercury Drive in Robinson Township. Robinson Township Fire Chief Paul VanVelzen said it appears the cause of the fire at 14258 Mackinaw Trail was due to an electrical problem with air conditioner power supply lines. "It was kind of a strange thing,' he said.

A blaze that broke out at a Grand Rapids-area metal recycling facility early today has been extinguished by firefighters. WZZM-TV reported no one was injured in the fire at Louis Padnos Iron & Metal in Grandville. It took about an hour for crews to get the blaze under control. The cause wasn't immediately known.

Don Kelly and Delmon Young hit first-inning home runs, Doug Fister and the Detroit bullpen held on and the Tigers edged the New York Yankees 3-2 Thursday night to win the deciding Game 5 of the AL playoff series. The Tigers escaped jams all game and advanced to the AL championship series against Texas. Jose Valverde shut down the Yankees in the ninth as the Tigers eliminated New York in the division series for the second time in six seasons.

Jackie VandenBerg has a personal stake in the annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event. Not only is she the chairwoman for the Grand Haven/Spring Lake event, her mother and mother-in-law are cancer survivors. "I have had a lot of personal pain,' VandenBerg said. This year's relay event was held this past Saturday and Sunday at the White Pines Middle School track. There were 82 cancer survivors who participated in the relay, raising more than $57,000 - $15,000 more than what was raised a year ago.

The Lakers' girls golf team advanced to the Division 3 state finals thanks to a second-place showing at Thursday's regional meet, held at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids. Forest Hills Eastern dominated the event with a first-place score of 336. The Lakers were next at 389, three shots better than third-place Petoskey. Big Rapids, Cedar Springs, Cheboygan, Comstock Park, Tri-County, Belding and Fruitport rounded out the field.

Grand Haven easily took care of Hudsonville in the opening round of the O-K Red Conference soccer tournament on Thursday, winning 3-0. The Buccaneers, the No. 2 seed, had little trouble with the seventh-seeded Eagles. Nate Rose, Willie Bennick and Jake Vanderlaan scored goals for the Bucs, while Willie Bennick and Chad Buitenhuis earning assists. Ethan Beswick recorded the shutout in goal, thanks in part to a strong showing by defenders Ryan Schoonover, Kevin LaCroix, Nick Kline, Andrew Wadaga and Matt Davis.

Spring Lake diver Wilhelmina Francisco scored a pool record of 227.20 at Manistee HIgh School on Thursday, helping lead the Lakers' swimming and diving team to a key victory over one of their top competitors in the Coastal Conference, 103-83. Francisco's effort led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Lakers in diving, as Makayla Boyink placed second (164.75) and Paige Rubleski was third (162.25).

Grand Haven's varsity volleyball team coasted to an easy win over Muskegon on Thursday, 25-12, 25-11, 25-9. The Buccaneers are now 3-2 in O-K Red play and 26-11 overall. "We've been working all week on staying focused from the first serve to the last, and I think we did that,' coach Katy Walters said. "We did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game and minimizing our errors.' Walters was pleased with the play of Krysteena Davis (seven kills, two blocks) and Taylor Craymer (nine kills, two aces).
