Grand Haven's varsity volleyball team coasted to an easy win over Muskegon on Thursday, 25-12, 25-11, 25-9. The Buccaneers are now 3-2 in O-K Red play and 26-11 overall. "We've been working all week on staying focused from the first serve to the last, and I think we did that,' coach Katy Walters said. "We did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game and minimizing our errors.' Walters was pleased with the play of Krysteena Davis (seven kills, two blocks) and Taylor Craymer (nine kills, two aces).

The votes are in and, for the second year in a row, Ottawa County Judge Ed Post is the overall winner of Grand Haven ArtWalk. Post won the 2011 contest for his photograph titled "Blueberries in the Snow.' "It's very gratifying and very surprising,' he said, "especially when I saw all the other work people created.' The winners of the second annual contest were announced Wednesday at ArtWalk headquarters.

A 38-year-old woman was killed Thursday night in a three-car crash on M-45 in Tallmadge Township. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said Michelle Newman of Allendale crossed the center line and side-swept another car, then hit a pick-up truck head on at about 8:45 p.m. Police said Newman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck, Allysia Ashman of Richland, is listed in fair condition at an area hospital. The accident happened near 24th Avenue, about 5 miles east of Allendale. It closed the road for four hours.

Police said the pilot of a single-engine plane was killed when his aircraft crashed near the runway at Tulip City Airport on Thursday night. The crash happened on the northeast end of the airport around 6:45 p.m. Police have not released the name of the pilot, as they were still trying to notify his family members. The Holland Sentinel reported on its website that the pilot was a 60-year-old Gobles man who was practicing "touch-and-go landings' at the Holland airport; and he was the only occupant of the experimental, home-built plane.

Although state dollars per student are down, numbers were up for Student Count Day at Spring Lake Public Schools. Enrollment in Spring Lake schools for the 2011-12 school year is 2,461 for K-12 and alternative education, according to the count taken Wednesday. That's an increase of 35 students over last year. The district will receive $6,880 per pupil, a reduction of $450 per from the 2010-11 school year.

"It's going to be hard to replace genius,' said Jonathan Hoffman, CEO of School Zone Interactive of Grand Haven. Hoffman was referring to the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, the man who "made computing a pleasure.' Jobs died Wednesday, months after resigning from the company he helped create with a friend in a garage in 1976. Jobs was 56. Sales of Apple applications represents 10 percent of School Zone's income, Hoffman said. "And that's only in the last 18 months.'

A national park and an American Indian tribe will receive a combined $1.1 million for environmental projects in northern Michigan. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the projects at a briefing in Grand Haven on Thursday. The EPA said the projects will be funded under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a multi-year program designed to boost the health of the lakes by cleaning up toxic pollution, fighting invasive species and other measures.

The West Michigan Spay and Neuter Clinic is celebrating its first year of providing "safe' spay and neuter surgeries in a low-cost clinic with an open house on Sunday afternoon. It will be held at the clinic, 6130 Airline Road in Fruitport, from 1-5 p.m. Officials from the nonprofit organization said the clinic aims to reduce the number of dogs and cats being euthanized locally because of pet over-population. They said they have performed 2,000th spay and neuter surgeries in the past year.

The Ohio State High Highway Patrol has seized more than $300,000 in illegal drugs and made three arrests in traffic stops along the Ohio Turnpike in northern Ohio. The patrol said the first arrests were made Tuesday in Lorain County when officers stopped a car for allegedly following another vehicle too closely. A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to about $200,000 worth of cocaine and heroin in the car.

A pet food and supply store with more than two decades of experience and roots tied to West Michigan has opened its doors in Grand Haven. Chow Hound opened late last month at 628 N. Beacon Blvd., the former site of a Sleep Doctor Mattress store. Sleep Doctor has moved to a plaza across the street at 465 N. Beacon Blvd.

John Nash, the supervisor for Spring Lake Township, has been selected as one of 40 finalists for a Governor's Service Award. Nash is one of five nominees in the "lifetime achievement' category, an award given to an individual who has displayed commitment to community involvement and volunteer service. Winners will be announced later this month in Detroit. Nash, 68, said he plans to attend the ceremony.

Officials said a school bus with no children aboard swerved trying to avoid a vehicle that ran a stop sign in Kent County and crashed into a ditch. No serious injuries were reported following this morning's crash. Officials said it happened as a Rockford Public Schools bus was heading to pick up elementary school students in the area, located about 12 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. Superintendent Michael Shibler said that the bus driver tried to avoid a Ford Flex that ran a stop sign.
