As part of its Community Artist Series, First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven will host a lecture series next week featuring Dr. James Fleming. The series of six lectures will take place over three days, Sept. 23-25, at the church, 508 Franklin Ave. A scholar of biblical archaeology, history and interpretation, Fleming is said to have the ability to make biblical texts come alive. His teaching skills and techniques inspire audiences around the world. He is a biblical scholar and man of faith who has lived in Israel for more than 30 years.

A half-dozen Boy Scouts made quick work in cleaning up an Ottawa County beach on Saturday morning. "We do so much community service, you wouldn't believe it,' said Jamie Corrin, mother of Boy Scout Troop 31 member Nolan Corrin. "I got a feeling all of them are going to make Eagle Scout, which is going to be something special.' The boys from the Marne-based troop joined about six other people to pick 35-40 pounds of trash from the sand at North Beach Park in Ferrysburg in a little more than an hour Saturday.

First Priority of the Lakeshore is organizing student prayer around local school flag poles for later this month. "See You at the Pole,' the global day of student prayer, began in 1990 as a grassroots movement with 10 students praying at their school. Twenty years later, millions are expected to pray on their campuses around their flagpoles at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Adopting an ordinance that would regulate peddlers in the city will be considered by Ferrysburg City Council on Monday night. Council will also consider adopting a policy for public building use and a resolution for investment services with Bank of Holland. During a work session, council will discuss a motorized millage proposal and an economic vitality incentive program. The meeting and work session will be held at City Hall, 17290 Roosevelt Road, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Downtown Grand Haven business will know more on Monday if a new Principal Shopping District and special assessment for their district will be implemented. City Council is being asked to consider a Master Plan amendment that includes language regarding a PSD within the city's downtown development authority (DDA) boundaries, as well as resolutions designating the city's Main Street DDA Board as the PSD board, and setting a special assessment for the PSD.

A 22-year-old Marine who recently returned from Afghanistan was killed after losing control of his car and striking a tree in Allegan County. Police told WOOD-TV that Gregory Courtney's Chevy Camaro was traveling about 120 mph just before the 5 a.m. Friday crash in Trowbridge Township. The Kalamazoo Gazette reported that alcohol also is believed to be a factor in the crash, about 30 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. Courtney was thrown from the car, which crashed less than a half-mile from his father's home.

Deborah Herrington, principal investigator and associate professor of chemistry at Grand Valley State University, has received a $1.1 million grant to expand and further study the Target Inquiry program. The TI program is an innovative professional development program designed to improve the quality and frequency of inquiry-based instruction in middle and high school science classes.

His emotion had nothing to do with the Buccaneers' 38-14 win over Jenison, which had wrapped up just moments ago. A victory on the football field seemed insignificant to the victory Lee Lattig scored over cancer several years ago.

Spring Lake scored 41 points in the third quarter alone on its way to a wild 69-40 victory over host Tri-County on Friday. The Lakers scored the final 14 points of the second quarter to lead 28-21 at halftime, then exploded offensively, thanks in part to a rash of Vikings' miscues, in the third. After T.J. Kriger scored on a 68-yard touchdown run early in the third, Tri-County's Connor VanderHyde returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score.
