Everyone was a winner in Tuesday's Spring Lake Village Council election. Incumbents were running unopposed and were successful in their re-election bids. Write-in candidate Bill Meyers also won a council seat. Village Councilman Jim MacLachlan won a two-year term as village president. He will replace Village President Bill Filber in January. Filber opted not to run again, saying he wanted to "take a breather' from politics. Incumbent councilmen Steve Nauta and David Bennett won four-year terms Tuesday night, as did Meyers.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources on Monday confirmed the presence of a cougar in Ontonagon County. The animal was captured on a trail camera on private property on Sept. 8, walking toward the front of the camera and clearly showing it has an ear tag and a radio collar. DNR Wildlife Division staff visited the property Sept. 12 where the trail cam is mounted and verified the location of the camera.

In a night highlighting the new in Fruitport's volleyball program, the Trojans didn't want to disappoint against an old neighboring rival. Fruitport unveiled its newly-renovated volleyball-only gymnasium and its 2010 Class B state championship banner on Tuesday at Fruitport High School, and then proceeded to accomplish what it's done quite often at its old stomping grounds - defeat Spring Lake.

The Spring Lake school board approved a two-year deal on Tuesday with the district's 40 support staff. The contract is similar to the one approved with the district's teachers last month. The Spring Lake Public Schools support staff includes bus drivers, food service employees and four maintenance employees. Under terms of the contract, support staffers have agreed to a two-year wage freeze and changes in health insurance plans. Some staffers will be eligible for a one-half of a step increase during the second year of the contract.

Steve Knoll is not surprised that car sales have been flourishing despite the sluggish economy. Knoll, general manager of Betten Preferred Buick GMC, said car sales are soaring at the Grand Haven dealership. "We're having good, consistent growth,' he said.

Prize-winning floral and multimedia artists from around the country will fill 5 acres of groomed woodland in Fruitport with massive floral and floral-related artwork later this month. "A World of Flowers: Cultures, Countries, Continents' will be open from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4-7 p.m. on Sunday. The exhibit is sponsored by Nature's Creative Edge and is open to the public.

Police are on the lookout for two men who robbed and shot another man outside a Muskegon apartment complex on Tuesday night. Muskegon Police said the shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. at the Glen Oaks apartment complex on Harvey Street. Residents called 911 after hearing shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a man laying on the ground. He was shot at least two times and told police two men he did not know robbed him. The man is recovering at a local hospital, authorities said; however, his condition is not known.

Grand Haven Township officials earlier this week discussed guidelines for snowplowing the township's 22 miles of bike paths this winter. Staff will plow a 5-foot-wide swath of the 8-foot-wide bike paths when the snow accumulates to 3 inches, according to Township Manager Bill Cargo. When snowfall measures more than 3 inches during the weekend, or during "non-business' hours, snow plowing will continue - using flex time and staggering schedules for employees to minimize overtime hours.

The Grand Haven Planning Commission has unanimously approved a recommendation to City Council to add the Robbins Road Access Management & Design Guideline Plan, and designating the downtown development authority district as the city's Principal Shopping District in the city's Master Plan. "We feel that it is a good modification to the Master Plan for the future of the city of Grand Haven,' Planning Commission Chairman Cecil Bradshaw said during Tuesday night's meeting.

A local blueberry farm will add nearly 40 acres to its property. The Grand Haven Township Board on Monday unanimously approved a request from Dave and Kelley Reenders of True North Farms to rezone the acreage for blueberry fields.

Michigan State has unveiled new green-and-bronze uniforms for its Oct. 15 game against Michigan. The 15th-ranked Spartans are one of a handful of teams chosen to wear Nike Pro Combat uniforms this season. Coach Mark Dantonio says the design is "cutting edge' and the uniforms will "make a statement' for one game. Dantonio says his players are excited about what Nike came up with.

Jake Vanderlaan and Michael Moran each scored two goals as the Buccaneers' varsity soccer team mercied Muskegon, 8-0. Nate Rose, Gerrit Schaap, Spencer Toepfer and Andrew Wadaga each added single goals for Grand Haven, which is now 4-0-3 overall and 1-0 in O-K Red play. The Buccaneers are ranked seventh in the state in Division 1 in the latest Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association poll. Rose picked up three assists while Matt Davis, WIllie Bennick, Cory Vanderlaan and Chad Buitenhuis each had single assists.

As part of this weekend's Salmon Festival events, the Grand Haven Steelheaders will host the Big King Fishing Contest on Saturday. The one-day event is open to any boat leaving from Grand Haven, or to anglers fishing on the Grand Haven piers. The cost to enter the tournament is $110. Fishing times for the tournament run from 6:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and all fish must be weighed in by 1 p.m. to qualify. The weigh-in will take place at the Grand Haven Waterfront Stadium.

The Grand Haven Salmon Festival, in its eighth year, celebrates the passing of summer while welcoming the fall harvest season and salmon migration, highlighting Grand Haven as an autumn destination. It takes place this weekend along the city's waterfront. Grand Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Marci Cisneros said with the event approaching the decade mark, they've been able to tweak it to benefit those who attend.
