Loutit District Library's local history and genealogy specialist, Jeanette Weiden, will conduct a series of three weekly genealogy programs on Thursdays, beginning Oct. 13. "Beginning Your Family Genealogy' will kick off the series on Oct. 13. Weiden will explain how to begin, how to stay organized and where to find records.

The Greater Muskegon Jaycees will debut the "Mysteries of Muskegon' tours Oct. 22 and 29. In a partnership with the Lakeshore Museum Center, the Jaycees will deliver the city's mysteries through guided tours of downtown Muskegon. These are racy stories of the city's past with a twist. The walking tours are 45-minutes long, depart every 20 minutes between 5 and 7 p.m. from the Lakeshore Museum Center, and advance registration is encouraged. The cost is $6 per person.

A 25-year-old Army captain from Kalamazoo County - whose boyhood maneuvers with toy soldiers were more like training than play - was killed along with a comrade from Tennessee when Afghan insurgents attacked their unit with a rocket propelled grenade, his family and the military said. Capt. Drew E. Russell of Scotts and Capt. Joshua Lawrence, 29, of Nashville, Tenn., died Saturday after enemy forces attacked their unit in Kandahar province, the Defense Department announced Monday.

West Michigan is such a pleasant place to live that the furthest horizon for many is where the waters of Lake Michigan meet the sky. But for Newaygo native Christopher Barrett, the horizon is endless. Barrett, 42, has studied in England and worked in Mauritania, India and Nicaragua. He only recently returned from a year in Iraq and now is readying to move to Thailand - where he, his wife and young daughter will live for the next four years. Barrett is an officer with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), an arm of the U.S. State Department.

The airport serving the Michigan city known for its annual Tulip Time Festival is shedding its floral name. The Holland Sentinel reported the governing board for what was known as Tulip City Airport in Holland on Monday approved the change to West Michigan Regional Airport. The board made the new name effective immediately, but the Federal Aviation Administration also needs to make the change official.

Close to 200 spectators turned out Monday for the dedication of the North Bank Trail's phase I - the first leg in a nonmotorized path that will someday connect the Lakeshore to Grand Rapids. "This trail will connect people and places,' said Spring Lake Township Community Development Director Lukas Hill, a key player in the trail's development.

For the three captains of the Spring Lake varsity soccer team, the feeling of losing a game in the Lakes Eight Conference is unknown. That's because it has yet to happen. The streak of 30-straight wins will carry over to at least next fall after the Lakers clinched the final game in Lakes Eight competition this season, winning the conference tournament championship game over visiting Orchard View on Monday at Spring Lake Middle School, 1-0.

Auditions for Central Park Players' upcoming production of "Seussical: The Musical' will be held tonight and Wednesday at Lakeshore Middle School's auditorium, 900 Cutler St. in Grand Haven. Ages 5-14 will audition between 6 and 7:30 p.m., and ages 15 and older will audition from 7:30-9 p.m. Show dates are Nov. 25-27 and Dec. 2-3.

The Woman's Club of Grand Haven and North Ottawa Community Health System are hosting a fundraiser for MammAide on Wednesday at the Grand Haven Community Center, 421 Columbus Ave. All proceeds from the fashion show and silent auction will go directly to MammAide, which benefits uninsured women in the community. To date, MammAide has paid for more than 200 mammograms. Many local businesses have supported "A Fashionable Evening,' organizers said. Local physicians will participate as models in the show, which will begin at 7 p.m.

The Hope College Concert Series will feature Brooke Waggoner at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Knickerbocker Theatre in downtown Holland. Waggoner will headline with a full band, featuring an assortment of instruments including violin and cello. She will play selections from various albums - including her most recent offering, "Go Easy Little Doves.' Both the album and its predecessor, "Heal for the Honey,' debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes singer/songwriter charts.

Jake Vanderlaan scored just 25 seconds into Monday's game, helping the Grand Haven varsity soccer team pull out a 3-1 victory over Jenison. That win moves the Buccaneers into Wednesday's O-K Red Conference tournament title game against East Kentwood. The Falcons, the top seed in the tournament, beat Rockord in Monday's other semifinal game, 2-0. Vanderlaan scored his second goal three minutes after his first, putting the Bucs on top 2-0. Nate Rose then scored to finish off the scoring for the Bucs.

Eastern Michigan University men's basketball coach Rob Murphy recently announced the signing of former Grand Haven standout Austin Harper. Harper, who last year played at Glen Oaks Community College, will be eligible to play immedately for the Eagles. "I made a visit to Eastern and felt a connection with the coaches,' Harper said. "I felt that this was a good fit for me and it is a great opportunity to continue my basketball career.'

The Muskegon Big Reds took top honors in the Class A division of the Grand Haven Marching Band Invitational Saturday, playing selections from the rock opera "Superstar.' The Fruitport Trojans kept the theme flying with "Angels' to take first place in Class B. As the host school, Grand Haven wrapped up the evening by performing an exhibition to music from the ‘70s and ‘80s rock band Styx, including "Mr. Roboto' and "Too Much Time on My Hands.' GHHS did not compete.
