A man who authorities said was found with a bloody mattress in the back of his pickup truck following a crash in southwest Michigan is getting a competency evaluation. Harold Ordway is charged with weapons violations after authorities said they also found a gun following the minor Sept. 2 accident near Plainwell. Defense lawyer Fred R. Hunter requested the competency evaluation. An Allegan County judge agreed to the request on Wednesday.

Families and students engaged in the college search will have the opportunity to connect with nearly 70 colleges and universities during the Holland Area College Fair on Thursday, Sept. 29. Hosted by Hope College, the event will be held in the Richard and Helen DeVos Fieldhouse from 6:30-8 p.m. In addition to featuring representatives and information from the participating colleges and universities, the fair will include two 30-minute information sessions regarding the financial aid process, starting at 6:45 and 7:25 p.m.

The Ludington father of a baby who has been missing since late June is facing reduced charges in her disappearance. A judge on Wednesday dismissed a kidnapping charge filed against 21-year-old Sean Phillips. He's jailed on $250,000 bond, and scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of parental kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment. Phillips now faces up to 15 years in prison instead of a possible life sentence.

A public open house to review construction plans for M-231 and connected routes north of the Grand River in Ottawa County will be held next week. The open house will take place at the Crockery Township Hall, 17431 112th Ave. in Nunica, from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. Michigan Department of Transportation officials will provide project details, the construction schedule and detour information. The public will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on the project.

For the second year of ArtWalk, the event's organizers are preparing for more creations to fill Grand Haven's streets, storefronts and municipal buildings. This year's event kicks off at noon Sept. 21, when Mayor Roger Bergman and several other city officials do the honor of a ceremonial painting that will hang in ArtWalk headquarters, 20 N. Fifth St., throughout the competition. The opening day ceremony will be held outside of The Grand, 22 Washington Ave.

Michigan's unemployment rate has risen 0.3 percentage points to 11.2 percent in the latest monthly figures. The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget on Wednesday released the seasonally adjusted unemployment figures for August. The state's unemployment rate continues to exceed the nationwide rate, which was 9.1 percent in August. The department said the jobless rate remains below the August 2010 rate of 12.2 percent.

Everyone was a winner in Tuesday's Spring Lake Village Council election. Incumbents were running unopposed and were successful in their re-election bids. Write-in candidate Bill Meyers also won a council seat. Village Councilman Jim MacLachlan won a two-year term as village president. He will replace Village President Bill Filber in January. Filber opted not to run again, saying he wanted to "take a breather' from politics. Incumbent councilmen Steve Nauta and David Bennett won four-year terms Tuesday night, as did Meyers.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources on Monday confirmed the presence of a cougar in Ontonagon County. The animal was captured on a trail camera on private property on Sept. 8, walking toward the front of the camera and clearly showing it has an ear tag and a radio collar. DNR Wildlife Division staff visited the property Sept. 12 where the trail cam is mounted and verified the location of the camera.

In a night highlighting the new in Fruitport's volleyball program, the Trojans didn't want to disappoint against an old neighboring rival. Fruitport unveiled its newly-renovated volleyball-only gymnasium and its 2010 Class B state championship banner on Tuesday at Fruitport High School, and then proceeded to accomplish what it's done quite often at its old stomping grounds - defeat Spring Lake.

The Spring Lake school board approved a two-year deal on Tuesday with the district's 40 support staff. The contract is similar to the one approved with the district's teachers last month. The Spring Lake Public Schools support staff includes bus drivers, food service employees and four maintenance employees. Under terms of the contract, support staffers have agreed to a two-year wage freeze and changes in health insurance plans. Some staffers will be eligible for a one-half of a step increase during the second year of the contract.

"A World of Flowers: Cultures, Countries, Continents' will be open from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4-7 p.m. on Sunday. The exhibit is sponsored by Nature's Creative Edge and is open to the public.

Police are on the lookout for two men who robbed and shot another man outside a Muskegon apartment complex on Tuesday night. Muskegon Police said the shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. at the Glen Oaks apartment complex on Harvey Street. Residents called 911 after hearing shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a man laying on the ground. He was shot at least two times and told police two men he did not know robbed him. The man is recovering at a local hospital, authorities said; however, his condition is not known.
