The Tri-Cities Garden Club will hold its annual plant and seed exchange at 10 a.m. Monday at William Ferry Park in Ferrysburg (next to the U.S. 31 and M-104 interchange). Kris Knox will supervise the exchange. Participants are asked to label all plants, bulbs and seeds for soil and light conditions. There will also be a brief meeting, followed by lunch. Senior Olympic gold medalist Jimmy O'Hearn will facilitate his "Balance Your Life' senior fitness program at Loutit District Library. Classes will begin Sept. 12 and continue every Monday through March 2012 from 10-11 a.m. in Program Room A of the library, 407 Columbus Ave. O'Hearn said men and women with back ache, shoulder, hip and knee problems regularly attend his classes to attain functional balance, mental alertness and increased energy.

What to do with all those extra tomatoes, zucchini and other produce from your garden? Preserving food at home can be a great way to eat more healthfully, to eat locally and save money. Michigan State University Extension educator Monica Smith will teach the basics of pressure canning, hot-water bath canning and freezing methods of preserving food on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Loutit District Library. The program is free and will be held in the library's Program Room A from 7-8:30 p.m.

Many would consider Scott Staal's junior season a wasted year. Staal missed the season with a broken elbow - sustained while throwing the football during two-a-days - an injury that kept him off the field the entire year. He may be delivering pizza at night, but Grand Haven resident Jake Bowen, 22, hopes his daytime fling will help him jump-start a career in the filmmaking industry. The recent Grand Valley State University graduate has started work on a feature-length film for his senior thesis and plans to use the 90-minute movie as his resume. Bowen and several members of his film crew were spotted shooting on location last week at the Pere Marquette train at Grand Haven's Chinook Pier.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said a Polkton Township man died Wednesday evening after falling from a ladder. James Blehm, 60, was trimming trees at a residence on Leonard Road when a limb hit the ladder he was using, causing him to fall more than 20 feet.

In a battle of two state-ranked Division 4 teams, host Western Michigan Christian scored early and late Wednesday night for a 2-0 win over North Muskegon. The Warriors, rated No. 6 in the state, raised their season mark to 3-1-1. WMC outshot the 10th-ranked North Muskegon, 30-4, but had trouble connecting with the twine. The Warriors got on the board six minutes into the game when sophomore Alex Rop fired a throw-in to senior Zach Meyers, who sent it past the keeper.

Grand Haven's varsity boys tennis team suffered a 5-3 loss to Rockford on Wednesday. The Buccaneers won twice in doubles but managed just one singles win. Varun Biddanda, a freshman, topped Rams' freshman Alex Amante at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Rockford won the other three singles flights in straight sets. The Bucs played well in the doubles flights, with Cam Rickard and Isaac Bowen winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, and Janno Heins and Ryan Peterson coming out on top 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2.

Spring Lake's varsity swimming and diving squad was impressive in a double dual meet with Fremont and host West Catholic on Wednesday, with the Lakers taking either first- or second-place in all but four events in their two victories. The Lakers defeated the Packers by a 147-36 score, and topped the Falcons in a 127-59 finish.

Prior to kickoff of Friday's varsity football game, Fruitport Community Schools will hold a brief ceremony recognizing the 10th anniversary of the attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001. Those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces will be admitted to the game for free and will be asked to come down onto the track for the national anthem. "We consider this a small way to say thanks for protecting our freedom and safety on a daily basis,' Trojans' athletic director Ken Erny said in a press release.

The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety has recently taken multiple complaints involving graffiti in the downtown area. Numerous buildings, both occupied and abandoned, have been vandalized with spray paint depicting both words and pictures. The incidents have occurred within the past two weeks. GHDPS is requesting anyone with information concerning these incidents to call 911 or Silent Observer at 1-877-88-SILENT (745368). A reward is available through Silent Observer for the arrest and conviction of the suspect(s) responsible for the damage.

Drivers traveling on Robbins Road in Grand Haven will soon be able to cruise a little faster. Grand Haven City Council, by a 4-1 vote Tuesday night, approved raising the speed of the road from 25 to 35 mph from Sheldon Road to Beechtree Street, based on speed studies conducted by the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Based on the decision by City Council, the speed limit on Robbins Road west of Sheldon would remain at 25 mph, and the limit east of Beechtree Street would remain at 35 mph.

Volunteers for a beach clean-up event on Saturday, Sept. 17, are being sought by the Alliance for the Great Lakes. The organization's annual September Adopt-a-Beach cleanup event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon that day at Grand Haven State Park and North Beach Park in Ferrysburg. Since 1991, nearly 70,000 volunteers have effectively removed more than 164 tons of debris from Great Lakes shorelines during this annual event. Beach sweeps are scheduled to happen Sept. 17 in four states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Scott Remenschneider, vice president of Huntington National Bank in Holland, will serve as chairman of the Greater Ottawa County United Way's 2011-12 Community Campaign. The campaign will kick off Sept. 15 - which is also the local United Way's Day of Caring, the largest one-day volunteer event in the county. Remenschneider will announce the campaign goal at NASCAR RV Park (formerly Yogi Bear Camp & Resort) in Grand Haven Township at 12:30 p.m. that day.
