Authorities in suburban Detroit said they've arrested a man who is charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl who became pregnant and recently gave birth. The Macomb County Sheriff's Department said 28-year-old Trevaun Brooks of Mount Clemens was found Monday evening at a home in the nearby community of Warren. Brooks is charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct. He was expected in court today. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said Friday that Brooks was supposed to talk to investigators last week, but did not appear.

An Ottawa County man helped save another person from a house fire Saturday night. The fire happened in the 9000 block of Four Winds Lane in Olive Township. A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the home of Scott Pierce, 42. When they couldn't make contact, Kevin Lothschutz went into the burning building - and, with the help of friends, saved Pierce from the fire. Pierce was hospitalized in critical condition because of burns and smoke inhalation. Lothschutz suffered minor injuries.

The chill of fall was in the air as hundreds of people turned out for the 4th annual Third Street Bridge Walk in Grand Haven on Monday. "I think a lot of people are here because it is a beautiful day,' said Mayor Roger Bergman, who helped to organize the event. The nearly 4-mile trek took walkers from the Third Street bridge on Harbor Island, down the Grand Haven boardwalk and to the end of the south pier. Once the walk was finished, people were able to walk to Chinook Pier, where there were prizes and ice cream provided by Temptations.

Auditions for the Muskegon Chamber Choir will be held Tuesday, Sept. 6, beginning at 7 p.m. in the choir room at Mona Shores High School, 1121 W. Seminole Road in Norton Shores. Candidates must be at least age 18 and have graduated high school.

A Wyoming, Mich. man was hurt in a water skiing accident late this afternoon on Lloyd's Bayou, northeast of Leonard Road. Richard Ponstein, 51, was slalom skiing behind a personal water craft shortly after 4 p.m. when he dropped the ski in order to ski barefooted, said Sgt. Bob Ruster of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The ski flipped up and hit him in the head, stunning him, Ruster said.

Friends and co-workers of Brenda Blahnik have set up an assistance fund for the family of the Spring Lake woman who was critically injured in a work accident Aug. 27. Blahnik, 47, suffered head and back injuries when the mechanical lift from which she was working tipped over and fell onto the cement in the pool area of the Spring Lake Community Fitness and Aquatic Center. She remains in an induced coma at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

A band of storms throughout the Midwest cancelled the end of one game, postponed another and caused delays in other matchups. Michigan and Western Michigan agreed to end their game Saturday late in the third quarter after a second delay due to lightning, giving Brady Hoke a 34-10 victor in his debut. "It was kind of wild," Hoke said. "Wet and wild." Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said the lopsided score played a part in ending the game early.

Expenses are piling up for the Grand River Greenway project. Village Manager Ryan Cotton said he learned Thursday that pilings for the boardwalk through the Mill Point Preserve wetland, west of School Street, will cost at least $80,000 more than the original bid amounts. Village Council on Tuesday will discuss options for the project, which is running more than $100,000 more than expected.

An amendment to the city's brownfield plan would pave the way for redevelopment at 128 Columbus Ave. City Council on Tuesday will be holding a public hearing during its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. about approving a redevelopment plan for the site, located between First and Second streets. The site was formerly a bowling alley and other businesses.
