Dr. Jared Van Ittersum has set some clear goals for himself. He wants to be part of the most technological dental practice in West Michigan. And he wants to be known as a dentist who is willing to give back to his community. Van Ittersum, 30, who grew up in Spring Lake, is well on his way to achieving those goals. He and his partner - Dr. Elias Achey - now own four family dental practices in West Michigan. Van Ittersum and Achey manage the Spring Lake Family Dentistry office at 102 Buchanan.

Friends and co-workers of Brenda Blahnik have set up an assistance fund for the family of the Spring Lake woman who was critically injured in a work accident Aug. 27. Blahnik, 47, suffered head and back injuries when the mechanical lift from which she was working tipped over and fell onto the cement in the pool area of the Spring Lake Community Fitness and Aquatic Center. She remains in an induced coma at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

A band of storms throughout the Midwest cancelled the end of one game, postponed another and caused delays in other matchups. Michigan and Western Michigan agreed to end their game Saturday late in the third quarter after a second delay due to lightning, giving Brady Hoke a 34-10 victor in his debut. "It was kind of wild," Hoke said. "Wet and wild." Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said the lopsided score played a part in ending the game early.

Expenses are piling up for the Grand River Greenway project. Village Manager Ryan Cotton said he learned Thursday that pilings for the boardwalk through the Mill Point Preserve wetland, west of School Street, will cost at least $80,000 more than the original bid amounts. Village Council on Tuesday will discuss options for the project, which is running more than $100,000 more than expected.

An amendment to the city's brownfield plan would pave the way for redevelopment at 128 Columbus Ave. City Council on Tuesday will be holding a public hearing during its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. about approving a redevelopment plan for the site, located between First and Second streets. The site was formerly a bowling alley and other businesses.

The Third Street bridge walk on Monday will include an opportunity to view the inside of the Grand Haven fog house. The structure at the end of the Grand Haven south pier is managed by the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy, in conjunction with the city. "This year, the Labor Day Bridge Walk will lead participants to the pier head,' said Dave Karpin, president of the Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy. "At that point, folks who wish to continue can come out to the fog house and see inside.'

Western Michigan Christian and host Elk Rapids played to a 1-1 tie after regulation and two overtime periods Friday before the Warriors won 2-1 after winnng a shootout, 5-4. Ryan Briggs - who scored WMC's goal in regulation - along with Alec Breit, Matt Wisen, Tim Schuitema and Tim denDulk all put the ball in the net in the shootout. There were plenty of tears shed Thursday night as former Fruitport football coach Larry Rueger was honored prior to the Trojans' victory over Newaygo. Rueger served as the Trojans' defensive coordinator the past 22 years. He passed away on July 28 due to kidney failure. He was 70 years old.

Howie Bailey was introduced to the sport of skeet shooting during his brief career as a relief pitcher with the Detroit Tigers in the early 1980s. Now, 30 years later, the Grand Haven native and current West Olive resident has been recognized as one of the best in the sport in the state of Michigan. Bailey, 54, was inducted into the Michigan Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame this past Saturday at the Michigan State Shoot at the Detroit Gun Club in Walled Lake.

Federal officials in Detroit said doctors, nurses and other medical professionals are among 18 people who are charged with schemes to steal $28 million from the Medicare program. The government said authorities arrested 15 defendants Thursday, and one was arrested in July and two remain at large.

The Michigan State Police will be dedicating traffic patrols during the Labor Day holiday weekend, starting 6 p.m. Friday, as part of a nationwide safety initiative. Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) is designed to improve traffic safety during heavily traveled holidays.
