Reyes' interception keys Trojans' win

On a night that it payed tribute to former defensive coach Larry Rueger prior to Thursday's Lakes Eight Conference opener against Newaygo, Fruitport's defense would have made its old coach proud. The Trojans' rugged 'D' made a big statement with the game on the line, coming up with a key interception in the end zone that locked up Fruitport's 30-10 win over visiting Newaygo.

‘Neighbors’ photos on display at Muskegon museum

"Neighbors: Photography by David and Kathy Myers' is on exhibit at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W. Webster Ave., through Nov. 6. The Myerses traveled to 27 cities, villages and townships in the Muskegon County to capture the telling images in the exhibition. The photographs link the similarities between residents, while managing to also emphasize their individualities.

Ottawa County Parks’ fall interpretive walk series begins Sept. 10

Ottawa County Parks will host several naturalist-led walks this fall. The walks last about 90 minutes and will be canceled if it is raining. There are no program fees and advance registration is not required. Be prepared for outdoor conditions.

Business mentoring workshop set for Sept. 20

The e-merge Entrepreneur Network and the Muskegon Chapter of S.C.O.R.E. business counselors are co-hosting a business mentoring workshop from 8-10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. It will be held at the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, 380 W. Western Ave., Suite 202. The workshop is specifically designed for people who are either currently mentoring a West Michigan business or considering becoming a business mentor. Anyone from the West Michigan region who is interested in learning more about effective business mentoring skills is invited to attend.

Air quality alert today

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment has issued an action day for elevated levels of ozone for today for Ottawa, Muskegon, Kent, Allegan, Mason, Oceana and Van Buren counties. The air quality alert means pollutants are expected to be in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups' range. People and businesses are urged to avoid activities which lead to ozone formation. These activities include refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling, using gasoline-powered lawn equipment, and using charcoal lighter fluid.

GM says U.S. sales up 18 percent in August

General Motors, Chrysler and Nissan reported surprisingly strong sales in August, as buyers went for fuel-efficient vehicles and Jeeps. Industry analysts had expected a weaker month because of consumers' anxiety about the economy and bad weather on the East Coast. GM's sales rose 18 percent, Chrysler's climbed 31 percent, and Nissan's were up 19 percent.

The Muskegon Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society has selected a young woman as its new director. S. Annette Jurcevic will be the first female director of the 70-year-old, all-male singing organization.

Chili cookoff raises $1,600 for The People Center

Great weather contributed to a great turnout and the ability to raise $1,600 in the fifth annual Smith's Bayou Chili Cookoff on Saturday, according to organizers. A check was presented Tuesday by the event's co-chairpersons, Rebecca Hopp and JoAnn Grotemat, to officials at The People Center in Spring Lake. People Center Director Karen Reenders said the timing couldn't be any better - "especially when you're getting to the end of the year and the money is running out from the Christmas giving,' she said.

Mich. retail stores no longer need price tags

For the first time in decades, price tags no longer are required on most retail items in Michigan stores. A law repealing the price-tag requirement took effect today. Gov. Rick Snyder had urged the Legislature to get rid of tags, saying they were unnecessary and discouraged new business. Jeanne Norcross, the vice president of corporate affairs for D&W/Spartan Stores, said their company has been working on the transition since the law was approved by the state Legislature in March.

Grand Haven plans Labor Day community walk

Grand Haven residents won't have to travel to Mackinaw City to join the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk activities. The city of Grand Haven is organizing a Third Street Bridge Walk on Labor Day at 9 a.m. as part of the Labor Day Community Walks that are held throughout the state in conjunction with the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk. Event organizers said the Labor Day walks link communities together for health, fitness and active living - similar to how the Mackinac Bridge links both Michigan peninsulas.

House of Chan restaurant to close on Sunday

A restaurant open for 60 years in the Muskegon area will close this weekend. House of Chan owner Joe Chan said the business he took over from his grandfather is losing money. Chan said he delayed the difficult decision to close as long as possible to keep his employees working. The restaurant's last day will be Sunday. Customers are already making reservations to be there on the final day, Chan said. The House of Chan started in downtown Muskegon and moved to Norton Shores in 1973.

GH soccer settles for tie with Unity Christian

A 3-0 spanking at the hands of Hudsonville Unity Christian last fall was still on the minds of Grand Haven varsity boys soccer players 12 months later. The Buccaneers were on the verge of avenging that loss, leading 2-1 in the final 10 minutes of Wednesday's rematch before the Crusaders struck back with a late goal. The two state powerhouses settled for a 2-2 tie in a highly competitive showdown at Buccaneer Stadium.

Unbeaten SL soccer continues hot streak

Spring Lake's varsity boys soccer team continued its torrid start to the season with an impressive 4-0 victory at Holland Christian on Wednesday. The Lakers are now 4-0 on the year. "The guys do a lot of hard work,' Lakers' coach Jeremy Thelen said. "Plus, we scored at the perfect times. We scored five minutes into the game, five minutes before halftime, and five minutes into the second half. We really took the wind out of them.'

Volleyball roundup: SL caps emotional week with crossover sweep

Spring Lake's volleyball team has coped with heavy hearts this week after one its players, junior Emily Blahnik, has dealt with a family tragedy. Blahnik's mother, Brenda, was involved in an accident at the Spring Lake Aquatic Center on Saturday, when a lift she was working on fell over. Emily has spent the week staying by her mother's side at Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids. Brenda was put into an induced coma and recently underwent surgery to relieve pressure on her brain.
