Artists in the "The October Show' at Gallery Uptown are Ann Trowbridge, Julie Hegedus, Larry Blovits, Susan Heath, Jim Markle, Dave Bazen, Jim Johnson and Larry Goff. The show will be on exhibit in the Walburg Gallery of the Gallery Uptown, 201 Washington Ave. in downtown Grand Haven, Oct. 3-31. The opening reception is Friday, Oct. 7, from 5:30-8 p.m. Informative talks by the artists will begin at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event. Gallery hours for October are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Hope College musicians will perform a "Brown Bag Concert' at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 E. Eighth St., at noon Friday, Oct. 7. The public is invited and admission is free. Founded and directed by Dr. Andrew Le of the Hope music faculty, the concert series takes place on the first Friday of each month. Each hour-long program consists of a variety of musical offerings from Hope students and teachers.

Two people are dead after the driver of an sport utility vehicle hydro-planed and crashed the vehicle into a house south of Holland on Thursday night. It happened around 6:30 p.m. on 146th Avenue in Fillmore Township of Allegan County. The crash did extensive damage to the house, police said. The homeowners said they were away celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary when the crash happened.

Spring Lake extended its Lakes Eight Conference winning streak to 27 games spanning the past three years with an 8-0 victory over Fremont on Thursday. The win wraps up the Lakers' third consecutive regular-season Lakes Eight title. Eight different players scored goals for Spring Lake: Alec Strahl, Austin Gabris, Adam Clauss, K.J. Sanchez, A.J. Broughten, Ben Keller, Michael Zietlow and Riley Kammeraad. The Lakers are now 13-1 overall and 7-0 in league games.

Grand Haven suffered a disappointing setback at the hands of East Kentwood on Thursday. The host Buccaneers lost 25-20, 22-25, 27-25, 25-19, falling to 21-10 overall and 2-2 in the O-K Red Conference. The loss virtually eliminates the Bucs from contention for the league title. The Bucs had no answer for East Kentwood's Natalie Means, who finished with 25 kills and four aces. Abby Cole led the Bucs with 19 kills and five blocks, while Krysteena Davis and Taylor Craymer each had 10 kills. Davis added four blocks.

A 25-year-old Battle Creek man has been charged with murder in this summer's death of a 3-year-old girl who was in his care. The Battle Creek Enquirer reported police were looking for Leo Ackley. He's charged with open murder and first-degree child abuse in the death of Baylee Stenman. Baylee died Aug. 1 at a hospital in Kalamazoo after being found unresponsive July 28. Charges were announced this week by Calhoun County prosecutors after autopsy results showed the child died from head trauma.

Grand Haven's girls golf team placed sixth at Thursday's O-K Red postseason tournament, which was held at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale. Grandville and East Kentwood tied for the league title, with Hudsonville finishing just one stroke behind the leaders. Sophomore Martha Ramsey shot a career-low 96 for the Bucs, including a 45 on the front nine. Kira Glass and Amanda Merz each shot personal-best rounds of 110.

The surf is up more than 20 feet in the middle of Lake Michigan and high winds knocked out power to a few homes in Grand Haven Thursday night. The gusty winds out of the north have downed tree branches and limbs, but gusts are expected to subside after 2 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids. NWS meteorologist Brian Meade said wind gusts of 53 mph were recorded at the Holland pier overnight. South Haven pier gusts hit 68 mph. The Muskegon County Airport recorded gusts of 41 mph, according to the meteorologist.

While construction crews tear through Harbor Drive, work is also progressing at the nearby Northwest Ottawa Water Treatment Plant's expansion project. The second phase of the project includes improving the existing raw water supply system - which includes construction of a new raw water transmission main beneath Harbor Drive from the YMCA to Prospect Street, and a new backwash water storage tank on Mulligan's Drive.

Detectives said a Grand Haven man was hit in the arm by an errant shot fired Thursday morning by a member of Grand Valley State University's public safety department, practicing a half-mile away at a Grand Haven Township gun range. Ottawa County deputies said the 30-year-old man went to North Ottawa Community Hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound. He told investigators he had been working on a home on Acacia Street when he was shot. Police said they found a house on Acacia had also been hit by a stray shot.

A Grand Haven man was hit in the arm, possibly by an errant bullet fired Thursday morning from a gun range a half-mile away, according to Lt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. A house in the same Grand Haven Township subdivision was also struck by a bullet. Sheriff's deputies were called to North Ottawa Community Hospital at 9:55 a.m. Thursday when hospital officials reported they were treating a man struck by a bullet, Bennett said.

Authorities said about $60,000 is missing from a nonprofit club in the northwestern Lower Peninsula. The Traverse City Record-Eagle reported today that members of the Interlochen Eagles recently handed over financial records to Benzie County investigators. Sheriff Rory Heckman said he plans to ask prosecutors to charge a former club employee with embezzlement. Heckman said the case will be presented to prosecutors in the near future.

The Grand Rapids Symphony opens its Crowe Horwath Rising Stars Series with a concert created in the spirit of ArtPrize - featuring music inspired by visual art. Associate Conductor John Varineau leads the orchestra in two performances of "ArtPrize Triptychs' - at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6; and at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at St. Cecilia Music Center in Grand Rapids.
