Both Fruitport and Grand Haven struggled at Saturday's Fruitport Invitational volleyball touranment. The Trojans failed to repeat their championship run a year ago at their home tourney and finished with a disappointing 1-3 record. East Grand Rapids was crowned champions, beating Traverse City West in the finals. Fruitport's lone victory was a 25-16, 25-9 win over Ravenna. Senior setter Lauren Hazekamp led the Trojans in both assists (84) and kills (25), while also recording 37 digs, five aces and two blocks. Defensive specialst Lindsay

Spring Lake's varsity boys tennis team scored eight points to place third out of four teams at Saturday's Holland Quad. Mitch Davis scored one point for the Lakers by going 1-2 at No. 3 singles. His win came against Lowell. Harrison Palmer and Stuart Velarde went 2-1 at No. 2 doubles, with wins over Lowell and Holland. Jonah Yoshonis and Erik Johnson also went 2-1 and were declared flight champions at third doubles after scoring wins over Lowell and Holland. Brenden Peel and Josh Cole were unbeaten at fourth doubles.

Host Western Michigan Christian came from two goals behind Saturday to tie non-conference Muskegon Reeths-Puffer 2-2 late regulation and take the lead 3-2 in overtime, only to lose 4-3 after the Rockets won in a shootout. The Rockets scored two goals in the game's first three minutes, only to see the Warriors tie the game with two goals of their own in the span of less than two minutes. Kameron Fowler gave the Rockets a 1-0 lead just 21 seconds into the game and Eric Hilt scored 2 minutes later to make it 2-0 for the visitors.

An 18-year-old Grand Rapids-area woman died early Saturday in a one-vehicle crash in Ottawa County. Sgt. Steve Austin of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said Tami Ann Lindemulder of Wyoming was driving a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero east on Fillmore Street at around 2:30 a.m. when she apparently failed to negotiate a curve in the road, east of 36th Avenue in Georgetown Township. Austin said she lost control of her sport utility vehicle and it ran off the road, rolled over and struck a power pole.

A trailer home at the Country Estates Mobile Home Park in Spring Lake Township was destroyed in a fire Friday night. Neighbors called 911 at about 8:45 p.m. after they saw smoke coming out of the trailer at 17399 Greenspire Drive, Spring Lake Fire Marshal Brian Sipe said. "First arriving fire units found heavy black smoke coming from the residence,' Sipe said. "Upon entering the residence, conditions worsened and firefighters were forced to make a defensive attack.'

A Grand Haven man was cited for not having a secure load after the 27-foot boat he was trailing fell off the trailer and onto West Savidge Street in Spring Lake around 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to police. The man, whose name was not released by police, was driving a pickup truck with his friend's boat on the attached trailer. When he pulled his truck and trailer out of the Wesco gas station and onto South Cutler Street, the boat fell off the trailer, Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Officer Adam Hill said.

As part of its Community Artist Series, First Presbyterian Church of Grand Haven will host a lecture series next week featuring Dr. James Fleming. The series of six lectures will take place over three days, Sept. 23-25, at the church, 508 Franklin Ave. A scholar of biblical archaeology, history and interpretation, Fleming is said to have the ability to make biblical texts come alive. His teaching skills and techniques inspire audiences around the world. He is a biblical scholar and man of faith who has lived in Israel for more than 30 years.

A half-dozen Boy Scouts made quick work in cleaning up an Ottawa County beach on Saturday morning. "We do so much community service, you wouldn't believe it,' said Jamie Corrin, mother of Boy Scout Troop 31 member Nolan Corrin. "I got a feeling all of them are going to make Eagle Scout, which is going to be something special.' The boys from the Marne-based troop joined about six other people to pick 35-40 pounds of trash from the sand at North Beach Park in Ferrysburg in a little more than an hour Saturday.

First Priority of the Lakeshore is organizing student prayer around local school flag poles for later this month. "See You at the Pole,' the global day of student prayer, began in 1990 as a grassroots movement with 10 students praying at their school. Twenty years later, millions are expected to pray on their campuses around their flagpoles at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Adopting an ordinance that would regulate peddlers in the city will be considered by Ferrysburg City Council on Monday night. Council will also consider adopting a policy for public building use and a resolution for investment services with Bank of Holland. During a work session, council will discuss a motorized millage proposal and an economic vitality incentive program. The meeting and work session will be held at City Hall, 17290 Roosevelt Road, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
