Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will host a musical recital and visual art display on Thursday evening. The church is at the corner of Quincy Street and 112th Avenue in Holland Township. The doors will open at 6 p.m. for the display, followed by a musical performance at 7 p.m. The vocal stylings will include straight opera (Puccini to Gershwin), musical theater and 1930s swing music. The artist mediums represented will include paintings, photography, sculpture, quilting and cross stitch. The event is free and open to the public.

Coopersville City Councilman Rodney Lloyd was at work at 3:40 a.m. Saturday, parking cars for the Coopersville Summerfest Del Shannon Car Show. When the first storm went through around 5 a.m., Lloyd said he thought the show may be canceled - considering rain was in the forecast all day. "At 5 a.m., it was really coming down,' he said. "But there was a lot of cars out here, even though it was raining.'

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Dan Bylsma returned to his hometown of Grand Haven last week to vacation and run his annual youth hockey camp in Grand Rapids. On Friday, he enjoyed a morning of charter fishing aboard the boat "Reel Pursuit,' captained by Ken and Jason Steigenga. Joining Bylsma on board was Grand Haven's Jay Brace, who submitted the winning bid at the Grand Haven Christian School auction last spring for the opportunity to enjoy a morning out on the water with the reigning National Hockey League Coach of the Year.

Republican leaders in Michigan voted Saturday to choose their 2012 presidential convention delegates with a closed primary, which supporters say is more inclusive than a convention or caucuses. Under Michigan law, a closed primary means people going to the polls must declare themselves Republicans before casting ballots. Some who opposed the measure say the primary will be closed in name only, since voters can just say they are Republican.

A Grand Haven Township man was arrested Friday for the alleged sex assault of a 12-year-old Grand Haven resident. Adam James Hitsman, 21, was arraigned before Judge Richard Kloote in Ottawa County 58th District Court on Friday and charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Bond was set at $7,000 cash surety and Hitsman was lodged in the Ottawa County Jail.

Old outboard boat motors will be in abundance in South Haven later this month. The Michigan Maritime Museum, in partnership with the Wolverine Chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club, is holding its annual Antique Outboard Motor Show, Swap Meet and Auction on Saturday, Aug. 27. Club members from across Michigan and Indiana will be displaying and talking about their antique and classic motors. Old iron will be seen and heard running and smoking in the test tank, as members show off their latest restorations.

Motorists are being warned not to let their summertime fun end with a drunk driving arrest. Law enforcement agencies in 13 West Michigan counties will be cracking down on drunk drivers through additional patrols from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning is coordinating the crackdown by administering federal traffic safety funds to more than 200 agencies in 35 counties. Grant-funded counties in West Michigan are Ottawa, Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Ionia, Kalamazoo, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo and Van Buren.

Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore and Loutit District Library are teaming up to offer "Got Money?' - an interactive workshop on saving, investing and becoming a young financial guru for girls in grades 3-12. The workshop will take place at the library, 407 Columbus Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. It will include speakers and activities, with a snack and lunch provided. The lower level of Loutit District Library turned into an art gallery on Friday, filled with colorful paintings and pieces of art all with a pirate theme. Andrea Hendrick, who was visiting the gallery with her children - Dallis, 5; Annabelle, 2; and Hudson, 9 months - said the pirate art gallery was interesting. "It's beautiful,' she said of all the art on display. "They have tons of great art.'

Excavation for the Grand River Greenway and new restrooms at Mill Point Park has uncovered some contamination - but nothing significant enough to alter the project. Vinyl chloride exists under most of western Spring Lake (from Park Street west) and central Grand Haven, according to Village Manager Ryan Cotton. The substance is the result of decomposing solvents once used by area manufacturing companies, he explained.
