A 5-year-old Hudsonville boy remained in critical this morning at a Grand Rapids hospital after riding his bicycle into the path of a car on Wednesday evening. Evan Matthew Brown suffered serious head injuries in the accident, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The boy was not wearing a helmet.

The Holland Kennel Club will hold an AKC-sanctioned "B' match on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Helder Park, 3751 104th Ave. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and judging will start at 10 a.m. The competition will offer conformation classes divided by breed and age, as well as junior showmanship classes. The match is open to dogs and puppies, 3 months and older, that have not been spayed or neutered and possess full AKC registration papers. The entry fee is $8 for conformation and $4 for junior showmanship. A free plush dog toy will be given to each entry.

Authorities have recovered the body of the second of two Detroit-area swimmers who were swept out into Lake Michigan off Saugatuck Dunes State Park. The Allegan County Sheriff's Department said the body of 22-year-old Brad Stoner of Livonia was recovered Wednesday night from the lake along Saugatuck Township. Police earlier said the body of Stoner's uncle, 46-year-old Daniel Reed of Redford, was found Wednesday afternoon.

With the recent installation of a new overnight parking kiosk at the corner of Franklin and First streets in Grand Haven, city officials have listened to the requests of residents and made significant changes to the city's downtown parking arrangements. A family vacation to Montana will force Abby Cole to miss tryouts for the Grand Haven varsity volleyball team this week. The 6-foot-, 5-inch all-stater shouldn't have much to worry about when it comes to her high school team, especially considering she's already earned a spot on a college roster. Cole turned down offers from several of the nation's top programs, including Penn State, which has won the past four NCAA national championships, and committed to the University of Michigan earlier this month.

The vibrant and diverse contemporary art and cultural heritage of the Caribbean island of Curaçao is the focus of an exhibition in the gallery of the Hope College De Pree Art Center, beginning Aug. 19. The gallery will feature "Island Reflections: The Contemporary Art of Curaçao' through Oct. 1. In addition, there will be an artist talk at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and an opening reception at 5 p.m. The exhibit, artist talk and reception are open to the public. Admission is free.

U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga came to the Grand Haven Community Center on Wednesday "to have a civil conversation.' When the Zeeland Republican asked for a show of hands of who came to the Town Hall Meeting to discuss the debt ceiling, a majority of the nearly 200 people present raised their arms. Huizenga talked to the audience about the recent debt vote and the nation's financial situation.

Grand Haven junior-to-be Abby Cole recently committed to play volleyball at the University of Michigan. Cole, who stands 6-feet, 5-inches tall, pledged her services to the Wolverines after a week-long camp in Ann Arbor. Also a standout on the basketball court, Cole earned third-team all state in volleyball following her sophomore season in which she averaged 1.6 blocks and 3.4 kills per game.

Funds originating from penal fines collected during the past year have been disbursed to the public library boards in Ottawa County. Distribution is done annually after the Library of Michigan has identified and certified the legal population for each library. Local libraries receiving funds include: - Allendale Township, certified population 19,923, total distribution $80,673.85. - Coopersville Area District, certified population 11,846, total distribution $47,967.80.

The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation has received national recognition as one of the top performing community foundations in the United States for the second straight year. CF Insights, a national data resource for community foundations, recently announced its list of the top 100 community foundation. Of the 252 community foundations surveyed, the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation ranked sixth in the nation and first in Michigan, in terms of gifts per capita.

The Prevailing Winds Community Band will perform "A View of America' at 4 p.m. Saturday at Covenant Life Church in downtown Grand Haven. Through narration, visuals and music, the audience will be taken on a journey of the history of the United States in music. There might be some facts and instruments you may have never heard. Several young singers will provide a short taste of a song Appalachian children sang long ago. The NOCCOA ladies tap dance group has two numbers to give a view of America during World War II.

UPDATE ( 1:55 p.m. Wednesday): The names of the two men missing in Lake Michigan near Saugatuck have been released by the U.S. Coast Guard. They are Bradley Alan Stoner, 22, of Livonia, who was last seen wearing Hawaiian-patterned swim trunks; and Daniel James Reed, 46, of Redford, who was last seen wearing blue swim trunks.

The Grand Haven High School Bucs Pride store will open at 1119 Washington Ave. on Thursday. Purple T-shirts with the "Bucs Pride' logo will be sold at the store for $10 each. To have the name of a loved one on the back of a shirt is an additional $5 per name. The store will be open Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 6 p.m. through the end of August. Store hours will be extended beginning in September.
