Police caught one of the suspects in a burglary in Norton Shores about four hours after the crime was reported. Norton Shores Police Chief Daniel Shaw said officers were called to a burglary in progress in the 6700 block of Grand Haven Road at around noon Thursday. The officers attempted to secure a 1-square-mile section of wooded property into which the suspects had fled on foot. Michigan State Police K-9 teams attempted to track the suspects; however, they were able to escape, Shaw said.

Police said a 45-year-old southern Michigan man kidnapped and raped a Montana woman after promising to give her a bus ticket home. Kelvin Hawkins was arraigned Thursday on charges including kidnapping and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The Battle Creek man was ordered held on $500,000 bond and faces life in prison if convicted. Hawkins has requested a court-appointed attorney. Police said he met the 48-year-old woman Tuesday in the Detroit area and promised to drive her to Battle Creek, where he would give her a bus ticket to Billings, Mont.

Beach Boys fans took a trip down memory lane on Thursday night with the tribute band Good Vibrations at Waterfront Stadium. The band played an array of Beach Boys cuts, ranging from "409' and "Catch a Wave' to slower tracks such as "Surfer Girl' and "In My Room.' Spring Lake resident Bill Chaddock said he was impressed by the band's performance, as well as the crowd's involvement in the show.

The Tri-Cities Historical Museum is offering an evening walking tour of the village at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. The 12-block walk, which takes about 75 minutes, will begin and end at the Spring Lake Village Hall, 102 W. A total of 51 people took part in the inaugural Grand Haven 5K Run/Walk Series this summer, according to Brook Sheldon, who serves as the race director for two of the three participating events. The series wrapped up with last Saturday's Coast Guard Festival run. Heading into that event Sheldon noted that nearly 80 people had participated in the opening two events - the Klever Innovations Kick Off to Summer Run, held over Memorial Day weekend; and the Grand Haven High School Patriot's Day Run, held over the 4th of July holiday.

Tom Treutler's vision of introducing the sport of baseball to the city of Hanoi, Vietnam, has made remarkable strides in just a short three-year time span. Treutler, a Grand Haven native and 1986 graduate of Grand Haven High School, is the executive director of Vietnam Pony Baseball. He's also the head coach of the Hanoi Capitals, a squad he's coached in both Pony and Little League competition.

President Barack Obama plans to visit Ottawa County next week to highlight his administration's efforts to boost the economy by promoting cutting-edge industries. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the president plans to visit Johnson Controls in Holland next Thursday. A day earlier, the president plans to visit Interstate Moving Services in Springfield, Va., to announce new fuel efficiency standards for work trucks, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles.

The Ottawa County Emergency Management monthly siren test will occur in certain areas on Friday. It will not be held in the city of Grand Haven and Grand Haven Township due to the Coast Guard Festival. The siren will sound at noon in the following Tri-Cities communities: Spring Lake and Ferrysburg; and Spring Lake, Robinson and Crockery townships. The test will also be conducted in other Ottawa County communities outside the Tri-Cities. The siren sound consists of a steady tone of 1-3 minutes.

The Anderson family will be selling homemade door mats at the Coast Guard Craft Show, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Grand Haven's Central Park. "My objective is to get my kids around people,' Jim said. "It's like having a lemonade stand with a pretty cool product.'
