Rain held off for those attending the annual Coast Guard Picnic at Coast Guard Park in Ferrysburg on Saturday, an event celebrating the 221 years of service provided by the U.S. Coast Guard. The event featured games for adults and children, a beer tent, food and music by local musicians, and a special honor for those who currently lead the city of Ferrysburg from the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival Committee.

Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27. Winehouse shot to fame with the album "Back to Black,' whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse - with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos - one of music's most recognizable stars.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested after police say he made sexual advances toward children at a Michigan park and told them he was part of a reality TV show. Michigan State Police said the man was being held Friday at the Gratiot County Jail and was expected to face charges of accosting children for immoral purposes. He was arrested Thursday at Reeds Park in North Star Township, about 35 miles north of Lansing. Police said the man told children he had a TV crew with him. Investigators were later told he assaulted a girl while in water at the park.

Two more samples taken from a waterway near Lake Michigan contained genetic material from invasive Asian carp, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Friday. The samples were drawn from Lake Calumet, on Chicago's South Side, during a second round of testing triggered by the discovery of Asian carp DNA there in May and June. The DNA was from silver carp, one of two Asian species threatening to enter the Great Lakes after migrating northward in the Mississippi River and its tributaries for decades.

Warm weekend forecasts for the majority of the Midwest, coupled with 19 boating under the influence citations issued by Great Lakes Coast Guardsmen in less than a week, has prompted the Coast Guard to remind boaters of the dangers and repercussions of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Five of the 19 BUI citations issued on the Great Lakes since Saturday were issued on Thursday.

Construction is scheduled to begin Aug. 1 on the 10-foot-wide nonmotorized trail from Fruitport Road to 130th Avenue. Spring Lake Township Manager Gordon Gallagher said work will be conducted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. He said some work may take place on Saturdays. The targeted completion date is Oct. 7. Once completed, Gallagher said the project will include boardwalks, scenic overlooks, a wetland mitigation area and a trailhead at 144th Avenue.

Having been in development for several months, the Grand Haven Downtown Development Authority's branding project is on the horizon. Grand Haven DDA Executive Director Dana Kollewehr said the new branding project is expected to be rolled out in September. "We want to get that thing going,' she said. Grand Haven was selected by the Michigan Main Street program in January to take part in the rebranding services being offered by W. Designs. Boyne City, Clare and Niles were also selected to receive the branding services.

The Westside Lacrosse travel team - a squad made up of high school players from West Ottawa, Holland and Grand Haven Hhigh schools - has enjoyed a successful summer at tournaments across the Midwest. The team won the HIgh School Boys A Bracket at the Brewtown Showdown in Milwaukee on June 24-26; took runner-up honors at the Great Lakes Lacrosse Invitational in Kalamazoo on July 9-10; and will soon add to its tournament resume with a trip to the Cherry Bomb lacrosse tournament in Traverse City on July 29-31.

The Grand Valley State women's cross country and track and field programs left little doubt that the Lakers would be the best Division II running program in the country this year. For the third consecutive season, Grand Valley State has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II Program of the Year, as released by the national office in New Orleans recently.

Authorities are investigating a reported fifth attack in a string of sexual assaults in and around downtown Ann Arbor. AnnArbor.com reported Friday that a 26-year-old Ypsilanti woman told police she was attacked late Monday night in a parking structure's elevator. The woman said she came forward after seeing media coverage of the sexual assaults and did not seek medical attention. Police said the sexual assault reports began July 15 and that each of the victims was alone at the time of the attacks.

Worship leader and composer Rick Hopkins will be leading Worship on the Waterfront at the Grand Haven Waterfront Stadium from 7:30-8:45 p.m. Sunday. Through his singing and song writing, Hopkins desires to share his life experience and a lifelong journey with God through music. His hope is that it will resonate with the audience longing to see a broken world made right. Hopkins puts his energy and emotion into writing songs that stir people closer to God.
