A lightning strike may have started a fire which destroyed a Crockery Township home early Saturday afternoon. "It is appearing, with the weather data, highly likely it is lightning,' Crockery Township Fire Chief Gary Dreyer said. Firefighters from eight area departments responded to a rural home at 9878 Taft Road at 1:45 p.m. when neighbors saw smoke in the area after the storm passed through. Dreyer said a meteorologist told him there were between 20 and 30 lightning strikes in the area when the storm went through between 1:15 and 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police in Kalamazoo have reported a string of burglaries in vacant homes in which the thieves seem to have been mainly interested in stealing copper pipes. Lt. Dave Ostrander said that "there have been 15 burglaries of vacant homes in which the property taken is primarily copper piping from the basements' since June 1.

Authorities said the annual Port Huron Float Down on the U.S. side of the St. Clair River led to rescues and dozens of cases of hypothermia. The Times Herald in Port Huron reported that strong winds caused some problems at Sunday's event, which drew about 2,000 to 3,000 people. They floated on inflatable rafts from Lighthouse Beach in Port Huron to Chrysler Beach in Marysville.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are at Selfridge Air National Guard base in Macomb County today to investigate the death of stunt wing walker who fell to his death at an air show on Sunday. The FAA said today the agency can't release any details yet surrounding the death of Todd Green. The experienced stunt man fell 200 feet to the ground Sunday afternoon while trying to move from a Stearman plane to a helicopter. Technical Sgt. Dan Heaton said Green hit the ground about 1,500 feet from the crowd line.

Fire officials were investigating a small fire in a living room at 201 Barber St. in Spring Lake at about 9:30 this morning, said Sgt. Curt Theune of the Spring Lake/Ferrysburg Police Department. Firefighters were called at 7:36 a.m. after an alarm alerted a lower-floor tenant to the fire. Theune said the tenant saw the flames, then got her children out of the house. Neighbors put out the small fire with a garden hose, Theune said.

Fruitport's varsity volleyball team started its new season on Saturday the same way it ended last year - with a championship. The Trojans, the defending Class B state champions, turned in an impressive showing at Grand Haven's 14-team Lakeshore Classic by rolling to the tournament title. The Trojans finished 6-0 during the day, inclduing a 25-20, 25-16 victory over the host Buccaneers in the championship match.

Artists from across the region flocked to the Grand Haven Municipal Marina on Saturday for the 11th annual Art on the Riverfront. Sponsored by the Grand Haven Area Arts Council, the one-day exhibit showcased the work of regional artists in a variety of media, including painting, photography, sculpture, pottery, jewelry, glass, wood and metal. Brad Patterson, whose work is showcased at both Gallery Uptown and at his home studio in Grand Haven, has been exhibiting his pottery at the show for the nearly a decade.

Saturday's thundershower slowed down a local Catholic parish's annual festival, but it didn't wash it out. "The rain held some things back, and created some frustration and disappointment for the craft fair people,' said John Strazanac, parish administrator for St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grand Haven. "The car show got off to a good start and slowed down when it rained, but things resumed after that.'

Spring Lake's varsity volleyball team showed resiliancy in battling through a trio of three-game matches at Saturday's Reeths-Puffer Rocket Invitational, but the Lakers ran out of gas in the semifinals against Zeeland East, falling 25-22, 25-20. "We had to play three matches to stay in the tournament and the girls displayed a lot of inner drive and fight to stay alive,' Spring Lake coach Sarah Bulthuis said. "There were times when we had to scramble and we really made some great defensive plays. It was nice to see that hustle.'

It was a bargain hunter's paradise in downtown Grand Haven, as Washington Avenue was filled with shoppers looking for the best deal during the Grand Haven Annual Sidewalk Sale on Saturday. Washington Avenue from Harbor Drive to Third Street was filled with both bargains and bargain hunters during this year's sale. The sale not only featured businesses from downtown, Centertown and Grand Landing, but also Chinook Pier.

Fruitport's varsity boys soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 win over Battle Creek Lakeview at the Portage Invitational on Saturday. The event was shortened to one game because of lightening. Sophomore Zach Gilson scored the Trojans' lone goal on a breakaway. Brad Edwards picked up the assist. Edwards, Taylor McLaughlin, Cody Pekel and Ryan Mason played outstanding defense in front of goalie Loghan Stong, according to coach Greg Kobylak.

Hot off the grill, "Michigan's Guide to Local Cooking' was written, designed and photographed by Susan Clemente of Spring Lake. Clemente said the book is both an informative guide to understanding and making choices about food as well as a "local food' cookbook. The author will discuss her book at Loutit District Library, 407 Columbus Ave., on Thursday, Aug. 25. The event will take place in Program Room A, beginning at 7 p.m. The book will be available to purchase following the program.

Jane Ladley, a Spring Lake resident and museum educator, will be leading an historic walk through the Spring Lake Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday. Ladley will highlight the lives of prominent Spring Lake residents responsible for developing the Spring Lake area. She will also point out and discuss gravestone symbolism. The walk is sponsored by the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. Advance registration is not necessary.

The Holland Area Arts Council will host a free open house for its Youth Dance Company from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. Arye Shannon-Carmichael will be introduced as the program's director. She will give examples of steps and movements the kids will learn during the classes.
