Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp's schedule of concerts and events during the second session of its 2011 camp season begin Friday night. The concerts will include performances by Blue Lake's Staff Band, Festival Band and Festival Orchestra; European groups touring the Midwest as a part of Blue Lake's International Exchange Program; several concerts in the Blodgett Recital Series; and an appearance by the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. Three childhood buddies who shared the gift of music together in Chicago will be reunited Friday night at First Reformed Church in downtown Grand Haven. Their concert at 7:30 p.m. will be a benefit for Worship On the Waterfront, the summertime Sunday evening concert series sponsored by First Reformed Church.

There's a proposal to install at least 4,000 electric vehicle charging stations across West Michigan. The West Michigan Strategic Alliance wants to put stations in several counties. Alliance President Greg Northrup is seeking approval from Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties for the project, which would be financed through a bond sale. Northrup discussed the proposal with the Ottawa County commissioners on Tuesday, and plans to give presentations to officials in Kent and Muskegon counties later this month.

Bob Worthington was surprised to read about former first lady Betty Ford's death very early Saturday morning. He wasn't surprised, however, about the phone call he received just hours later. The Grand Haven Township trustee has been a volunteer with the Gerald R. Ford Foundation for two and a half years. He will be an usher at Betty Ford's funeral service in Grand Rapids on Thursday. "My heart goes out to the Ford family,' Worthington said. "I hope it's a great service for them to say good-bye to their loved one.'

Jake Vanderlaan and Willie Bennick fondly remember playing for youth soccer teams such as the Tri-Cities Strikers when they were children. Their experience was made more special, they said, because Mike Herman often volunteered his time to help coach at their practices. "Mike was a huge influence on me,' Vanderlaan said. After months in the works, Grand Haven planning commissioners have finally forwarded language to City Council that - if approved - would allow for new wind turbine regulations in the city. The recommendation was approved Tuesday by a vote of 7-1, with Planning Commissioner Justin Arnold voting against the recommendation to council. "The process has been a long process,' Planning Commission Chairwoman Erin Kauth said. "This is actually the second public hearing we've been through.'

Gov. Snyder signed a bill Tuesday that renames a portion of U.S. 31 in Ottawa County as the Medal of Honor Recipients Highway. The renamed portion of the highway stretches from Interstate 196 on Holland's south side to M-45 in Grand Haven Township. The measure was sponsored in the state House by Rep. Amanda Price, R-Park Township.

The C3 Exchange "community' will be moving to a new home in Grand Haven this fall. C3's executive minister, Ian Lawton, said the "spiritual community' will rent the Grand Haven Community Center's Mackinaw Room for Sunday services and events beginning Sept. 25. Lawton said they are still looking for space to host weekday activities.

Authorities said construction barrels warning motorists of a downed tree were removed from a West Michigan road before a motorcyclist slammed into it, sustaining fatal injuries. Van Buren County Sheriff Dale Gribler said the tree fell Monday. Severe storms hit southern Michigan that day, downing many trees and utility poles. The crash happened in Paw Paw Township, about 50 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. Tangled power lines prevented crews from removing the tree on Monday.

Authorities said a breaking-and-entering suspect punched a Battle Creek police officer in the face early today and tried to grab the officer's gun before the officer shot him in the arm. Police reportedly responded to the break-in about 1 a.m., and the officer tried to arrest the man. Police said the man hit the officer, forced him to the ground and tried to take his gun. The officer was treated for injuries to his face and released. The suspect was hospitalized for treatment of a non-life-threatening wound.

A judge has sent a Muskegon man back to prison for sexually assaulting his pet dog. Muskegon County Circuit Judge William Marietti ordered Jose Sanchez, 59, to prison for 17 months to 22 1/2 years. The judge also asked state corrections officials to get counseling for Sanchez. Sanchez told investigators for a pre-sentence report that he was sexually abused as a child. Sanchez pleaded no contest last month to bestiality. His parole officer was told the dog was sexually assaulted Aug. 2. The 60-pound female dog has been taken in by a foster family.
