After 11 years of service, Roger Cotner is stepping down from the Loutit District Library Board. In his letter of resignation to the board, the local attorney said "it has been a real privilege' to be associated with the library, and he felt it was "time for someone else to bring new and fresh perspectives to this important position.'

In an exercise room in the Mercy Health Partners Bladder Control Clinic, a group of mostly middle-age women did a series of exercises to help them gain control of what medical professionals say is a common problem. The women were gathered in a room of Hackley at the Lakes, 6401 Prairie St., for a session of Total Control, a class taught at the clinic aimed at strengthening muscles in the abdominal and pelvic region. The class also educates participants about good fluid intake habits and is aimed at women of all ages,instructors said.

No one was injured when a Park Township woman crashed her vehicle into the front of a Holland-area restaurant Friday afternoon, police said. Witnesses told police that Mary Jillson, 75, was attempting to back out of a parking space in the lot at Zoup!, 3435 W. Shore Drive, but instead drove forward. Police and firefighters responded to the restaurant shortly after 2 p.m. to find that Jillson, whose vehicle was about halfway through the front entrance area of the building, was trapped in her vehicle, police said.

When Sandra Shelley heard on the radio about the shooting of seven people in Grand Rapids Thursday evening, she was driving west to Muskegon on Interstate 96. Moments later, she and other drivers were diverted onto the Plainfield Avenue N.E. exit by two police officers who were standing near their car with their guns drawn, she said.

As a competitor at the 2009 Half Ironman World Championship in Clearwater, Fla., last year's Ironman competition in Lake Placid, N.Y., and other major events, Grand Haven's Dr. Dirk Bakker falls into that elite category.

A motorcyclist died Thursday night after crashing on a curve in Norton Shores, police said. Thomas Westra, 59, of Fruitport, crashed on the curve of westbound Seaway Drive at Green Street at about 9:15 p.m. Police said he was pronounced dead at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon shortly after the crash. Witnesses told police that Westra had left the Pin Crest Bowling Alley in Fruitport to go for a ride with friends. Witnesses said the motorcyclists were seen in the area driving at high speeds.

A leading candidate for Indiana governor has joined an effort in Congress to require a review of the potential harm to industries if Chicago-area waterways are closed to prevent Asian carp from entering Lake Michigan. Republican Rep. Mike Pence and Democratic Rep. Pete Visclosky on Wednesday filed a bill in the U.S. House that would mandate the study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Pence, who is seeking the 2012 GOP nomination for governor, called Asian carp a "serious but manageable threat to the Great Lakes region.'

The three-wheeled Cushman used to patrol parking areas in Grand Haven will soon be replaced by a more economic vehicle. At its meeting on Tuesday, Grand Haven City Council approved a bid of $13,370 from Deur-Speet Motors of Fremont to provide the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety with its new cadet vehicle - a Chrysler GEM e2. "We had in the budget around $25,000 to get a replacement for (the Cushman),' said Lt. Joe Boyle of the GHDPS. "I felt we could save some money by looking around.'

UPDATE (1:15 p.m.): An ex-convict who went on a deadly shooting spree targeted two ex-girlfriends, fatally shooting both of them and five members of their families, including his own 12-year-old daughter, police said today. At the start of his hours-long rampage, Rodrick Shonte Dantzler tracked down his daughter and her mother and killed them, along with the mother's own parents. He then went to a different house and killed another former girlfriend, plus her sister and 10-year-old niece.

Matthew Dickinson, 9, smiled as a colorful bird stood on his shoulders. The macaw, Dickinson's favorite bird, flapped its wings and added to the chorus of squawks throughout the room. Margie Davis of Grand Haven presented a children's program at Loutit District Library on Thursday morning. She brought parrots from the Lakeshore Parrot Haven Sanctuary to teach kids about the birds.

Ottawa County Undersheriff Greg Steigenga said there were no officers directly involved with assisting in the tragedy that played out in Grand Rapids on Thursday, but there were deputies stationed in squad cars at a few main roadways in the county.

A small fire at a Fruitport convenience store Thursday night was started by a cigarette butt thrown into a trash can, authorities said. Erin Trattles, an employee at Coop's Dock & Deli, 187 S. Third St., was about to close the store at 9:55 p.m. when she received a call from someone who could see smoke coming from the back of the building. Smoke could be seen coming from the rear of the building, and firefighters extinguished the blaze almost immediately.

City planning commissioners have decided to move forward with the process of updating the city's master plan, which would allow for a Principal Shopping District within Grand Haven's Downtown Development Authority district. A PSD allows a municipality to collect revenues, levy special assessments and issue bonds in order to address the maintenance, security and operation of a district in order to promote economic development within a defined area.
