The West Michigan Pike was a 400-mile meandering ribbon of road, hugging the coast of Lake Michigan from Michigan City, Ind., north to Mackinaw City, and passing through many small beach towns along the way. Its 1913 slogan, "Lakeshore All the Way,' sums up the main feature of this gem of a travel route. The road was sometimes called Michigan's Route 66.

The "Mighty Mac' came in to Grand Haven Monday afternoon with one commander and will be leaving Sunday with a new face at the helm. Command of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw was transferred from Cmdr. Scott J. Smith to Cmdr. Michael J. Davanzo during a ceremony at Escanaba Park on Wednesday afternoon. Smith, who has been commanding officer aboard the Mackinaw since May 2008, said he was honored to have been able to serve on the Cheboygan-based cutter. "I'm happy to report that I drove the heck out of that ship,' Smith said.

Rip currents that took hold of more than 20 people at Holland State Park on Wednesday weren't as severe in Grand Haven, officials said. Melissa VanderVelde, the acting supervisor for Grand Haven State Park, said the issues that plagued Holland State Park on Wednesday did not effect Grand Haven's beach. "The wind was coming out of the north, so the pier was protecting us,' she said.

A 35-year-old Grand Haven Township resident has been arrested after allegedly breaking into an office and stealing from its safe. Police said the incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Monday at the Grand Haven Club Apartments, 14868 Lakeshore Drive. When employees reported to work at 9 a.m., they noticed the office and safe had been compromised, police said. Investigators from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department said they located the male suspect on Tuesday after investigating and locating the suspect's vehicle.

Bryan David Snuffer is displaying more than a dozen pieces of his Coast Guard paintings in an exhibit at the Tri-Cities Historical Museum's Depot location, 1 N. Harbor Ave., through Aug. 30. The exhibit is titled "Semper Paratus: An Exhibit of Fine Art Telling the Coast Guard Story.'

There's no doubt the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival has always been child friendly, with events such as the annual Kid's Day and the ever-popular downtown carnival. Thanks to an effort from the North Ottawa County Council on Aging (NOCCOA), there's also an event now dedicated to those 50 and older.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources closed the beach at Holland State Park two hours early Wednesday night because of dangerous rip current conditions in Lake Michigan. DNR officers instructed people to get out of the water and leave the beach area about 7:30 p.m., according to WZZM-TV. The beach normally closes around 9:30 p.m. A Coast Guard spokesman said emergency crews had rescued at least 20 people out of the lake by 7:30 p.m. Wednesday because of rip currents. At least 15 people had to be transported to area hospitals for treatment.

After months in the planning stages, Grand Haven is closer to having a new ordinance regulating wind energy turbines within city limits. City Council on Monday unanimously approved a first reading of a zoning amendment that will allow wind turbines in the city, following a recommendation from the Grand Haven Planning Commission in July. "Basically, this follows the model the county put together for a model wind turbine ordinance,' City Councilman Bob Monetza said.

The final concert in this year's Sounds of Summer series is tonight at Pottawattomie Park in Grand Haven Township. Event organizer Dave Palmer said that there will be "a ton of stuff going on' at the series finale from 7-9 p.m. "It is a variety show called the Dave & Dave Show,' Palmer said.

Voters in Grand Haven Township approved a fire/rescue millage renewal on Tuesday. The three-year, 1.5-mill tax was passed 741-256. Of the 997 total votes, 811 were made with absentee ballots, Township Clerk Sue Buitenhuis said. The millage renewal means a home with a taxable value of $100,000 will see an increase of about 66 cents, according to Township Manager Bill Cargo. The millage is expected to raise $882,960 in the first year of the Township Fire/Rescue Department's operational budget, Cargo said.

The 50th anniversary of "Runaway' - the No. 1 hit by Del Shannon - will be celebrated at this year's Summerfest and Del Shannon Car Show in Shannon's hometown of Coopersville. The festival is Aug. 8-13. Del Shannon, known to locals as Charles Westover, was a significant rock'n'roll singer and songwriter, and producer to many well-known artists - such as Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. The Beatles were once Shannon's opening act. Westover died in 1990 at the age of 55.
