The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety is joining law enforcement agencies across the state for a Fourth of July holiday crackdown on drunk drivers. Motorists will see increased patrols beginning July 1 through July 10 in Grand Haven. Local law enforcement officers said they will take to the streets working to prevent drunk driving injuries and deaths by arresting impaired drivers.

Although Mother Nature may try to dampen the championship match of the Spring Lake Invitational Tournament this morning, it should be an intriguing final once it does get teed up. In a mathup that could be labled the established champion against the up-and-coming challenger, Charlevoix native Maureen Whitehead will look to defend her SLIT title in the Championship Flight, while West Olive resident and 2009 Grand Haven High School graduate Collette Hansen will be seeking her first - in just her second ever apperance at the 90th annual women's match play tournament.

Grand Haven senior Aliina Weykamp and Spring Lake senior Katie Smith each earned second-team all-state girls soccer honors for their outstanding seasons this past spring. Weykamp, who has committed to play soccer at the University of Illinois next year, was a four-year starter for the Bucs.

Two men were taken to area hospitals after a bicyclist crashed into a motorcyclist Wednesday night on 104th Avenue near Sleeper Street, according to Sgt. John Wolffis of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The motorcyclist, Dick Cook, 50, of Grand Haven, was transported by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital where he was treated and then released, hospital spokesperson Jennifer VanSkiver said this morning. He was wearing a helmet, Wolffis said.

Dan Bylsma of the Pittsburgh Penguins has won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year. Bylsma, who grew up in Grand Haven, led the Penguins to the playoffs despite the absences of stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who both missed much of the season. The Penguins (49-25-8) had the second-most victories and points in franchise history.

Area residents are invited to "Come Grill with the Marines' during a steak dinner benefit from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday at the American Legion, 700 S. Harbor Drive. The cost is $12 and all proceeds will go to SupportForMilitaryFamilies.org, which is led by Marine Corps League Chaplain Linda Zoerhof. The event will feature karaoke and prizes. It is sponsored by the Shoreline Detachment of the Marine Corps League, but benefits local families of veterans and active-duty members of all branches of the armed services.

The first full weekend of summer in Grand Haven will be filled with activities, according to Courtney Olson, Chamber of Commerce Grand Haven-Spring Lake-Ferrysburg program and events support coordinator. The events start Saturday morning with the Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then the Sunday Art Market on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both markets are located at Harbor and First Street under the green canopy.

A lawsuit filed Tuesday in Ottawa County Circuit Court seeks in excess of $25,000 in damages for one of the passengers involved in the 2009 boating accident which took the life of 15-year-old Robby Jerovsek of Spring Lake. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of 23-year-old Kaitlin VanDam of Kent County, claims negligence on the part of defendants Michael, Nina and Jack McKeough and the estate of Robert Jack Jerovsek.

Village President Bill Filber has decided "to take a breather' and not seek a fourth term as Village Council president. "I enjoyed most of the moments I was on council,' Filber said Tuesday after the 4 p.m. filing deadline had passed. "I want to give somebody else the opportunity to be the president of the village and take a year or two off from politics.'

Two Spring Lake Township women suffered minor injuries when their mini-vans collided, then crashed into a utility pole and a garage off 148th Avenue on Tuesday evening. Felisha Shatney, 19, who is eight months pregnant, was taken by ambulance to North Ottawa Community Hospital where she was in good condition, said Sgt. Keith Garvelink of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department. The other driver, Denora Karell, 54, sought her own treatment for injuries, Garvelink said.

Lance and Kathy Parma wanted to find a cozy cottage in downtown Grand Haven when they started searching for a new home five or six years ago, Lance said. They bought the fixer-upper at 114 N. Fifth St. with the intention of creating a backyard oasis as well. They concentrated on the house, then finished up the yard last spring. Now they will be sharing their oasis with participants in the Tri-Cities Garden Club's 17th annual Garden Walk on Saturday.
